The new 55-250 should be pretty impressive!! (but where be the prime-like quality 16-50 f/4 IS)

I think the EF lenses and 7D2 and higher MP FF (and one would hope higher DR) cams and such are looking all 2014 for sure now.

cool. the 55-250 has always been a bargain performer. Hopefully this will be bundled more cheaply as a kit.

Fred's post mentions the S120 lens as f/1.8-2.8, but product photo shows f/1.8-5.7.

I wish it was f/1.8-2.8, but I'm thinking it's still f/1.8-5.7

It is 1.8-5.7 compared to the s110 being f2-5.9

Well the 55-250 was the obvious next lens to be STM'ed . Will most likely be seen in those twin lens kits pretty soon which should be great value .

I would expect the next STMing to be on the 18-200 (hopefully with better optics as well)

As for the P&S's meh .

I think (hope) there will be some proper announcements in a few days (weeks) time . Canon normally announce compacts and DSLR's / Lenses at different times (the EFs announcement at this time may scupper that but I hope not)

Maybe will be seeing an new 50 with IS ? An f4 UWA with IS ? And fingers crossed the 7D2

It's great news that the front of this 55-250 doesn't turn with AF anymore. I may get this lens as a cheapie travel lens.

Hopefully the IQ is the same or better!

Wow. In the past Canon had a major announcement every 3rd week in August with a 1D series or at least an xxD and a few L lenses.

Ahh, good catch! When I originally saw the f/1.8-2.8 in the OP I thought they had made it more like Panasonic's LX7 lens at 24-90mm f/1.4-2.3. I probably would have picked one up if that was the case

That's what I thought too. At least this helps ensure I don't spend any money for awhile. The only lens that has come out recently that I have any interest in is the 200-400 f/4, which is too expensive for me.

They did come out with the 24-70 f/4L in the past year I believe....and we can all see how that's flying off the shelves.....

That being said, I hope the new 55-250 STM has a good optical upgrade as opposed to just adding STM. Could be a great telephoto budget alternative for a lot of people, although a used 70-200 f/4 non-IS would still be my choice I'm guessing.

I'm not that knowledgeable about the G's.. is there anything new and interesting the specs, other than wifi?

Have to say I'm surprised they kept it as 12MP.

The 70D is basically their August xxD announcement. Only it got announced a bit earlier this time.

Sometimes 1 series were announced in the spring and they may be moving 7 and 5 series then too?

I always like the spring release better. When the 5D3 came out you could use it all summer long, for trips, it was out for fall sports and foliage, summer surfing, etc. The last quarter releases kept coming out later and later until with the 5D2 you not only missed late summer, but the entire fall sports season AND fall foliage and they were putting stuff out just in time for.... winter. (of course I say this all as a person from the northern hemisphere and in an area with seasonal change, such areas probably do account for a majority of their overall sales though I'd guess).
