My little girl back to school today (1st grade). B&W and color versions below...which do you like better? Any C+C is welcome.

Thanks,
Aaron

Nice shots Aaron. I think I like the color version more as her eyes go well with the background.

Nice work.

Thanks Hatch. I just realized I didn't vignette the color version. I think I'd like it better a little dark in the corners.

Nicely done. I usually have a preference for b&w but think the color version is best in this case. Those colors just can't be denied...

I'm usually a all B and W shooter, but I would def. prefer the color here, it just works all together here

And I'm just the opposite. I'm usually a color portraitist. But I really prefer the b&w because your eyes go right to her beautiful face and stay there. In the color one your eyes jump all over the place.

Jack, I kind of feel the same way. The vignette I added may help a little with distractions:

I always vignette portraits and it does help this image a little but I'm still taken with the power of the b&w to evoke emotion.

Thanks all!

So here's another question. I'll probably get some of these developed for family members and will have to crop this to an 8X10 or 5X7. My thought was just to crop some of the bottom (her clothing), is that what you all would recommend?

Personally I think the crop if perfect the way it is.

I prefer the B&W on the original, but the color when vignetted a bit. I'm also begging for a little bit more depth of field here. You nailed the eyes, but her chin is soft due to the angle, and it makes me itchy. Beautiful little girl. Mine starts Kindergarten tomorrow, so I'm gearing up for the first day photos myself.

I think cropping a bit of the top works better for your developing, because her eyes draw from the top

It looks like you were slightly higher than her when taking the shot, hence the crop from the top recommendation

@Jack - I like this crop too, but out-of-camera the dimensions do not fit standard printing (8X10, etc.). I hate that too because I generally compose exactly what I want the picture to look like, but then I have to chop off part of it to print...

I typically use a light vignette, but I think (IMO) yours is too heavy. The problem with it is that it looks like a vignette. When you make it subtle so it's not even noticeably a vignette, then it's effective. In my opinion.

I used to frame exactly in camera but now I always allow some space to be able to crop in any way I see fit later.
