.......then 600 MkII might fit the bill nicely. If more reach is needed, 600 II + 1.4xTC III works great too. Then, if even that is not long enough, 2xTC MkIII should help.
Now, how is that for versatility ?

(1), (3): 1DX + 600 f/4 IS MkII.
(2), (4): + 1.4xTC III
(5) : + 2xTC MkIII

All shot handheld.

"When 800L is just a bit too long...." that's a first world problem if I've ever heard one. Great shots btw

Lovely images Peter. The look on the faces of the fish (do fish have faces?) just as they're about to be swallowed whole seems a strange mix of resignation and calm. "I knew this would happen. Dammit!"

Great pics Peter.

I know I love this lens and the TCs with it. Of course I'm not spoiled for choice between all the super-telephotos as you are....so I'm probably biased

For Great Blue Herons, all you need is a 7D and 100-400.

Or if you want, you can use a 1D Mk4 with the 100-400.

Hey, Tony. That first one looks a bit noisy.

Are you going to post on the "1DX images" thread, too?

Jim, let the man post where he wants.....I can only improve when masters show me the way.

Another one with handheld 1DX + 600 II + 1.4xTC III.

Peter, I love them all but 3 and 5 are my favorites. You are seriously making me think I need a 1DX but no way I could swing all those big lenses you have. And, fortunately, I'm smart enough to know even if I had the exact equipment I'd still not get results like yours. You are indeed the pijunmaster.

Peter,
When you really want to get serious about tracking BIFs:
http://www.rcopticalsystems.com/projects/twin_24s.html
(each roughly 4800mm @ f/8)

(but I'd hold off for a little while... your shots are still amazing!)

Every image posted (so far) by the dueling GBH shooters is excellent.

Peter,
Not that I was not impressed with your images and they were indeed impressive, but I am more impressed with the attribute: "all shots handheld". Even using my 5D Mark III, the bare lens was pretty tough to handle, let alone with a TC and heavier 1Dx.

Kathy, you'd be surprised how enabling a good setup is, such as 5DMkIII (or 1DX) + 300 f/2.8 IS MkI or MkII, with TCs. Once you manage to get close to your target, the rest is really easy.

Hammy, those telescopes must have an awesome Servo AF/tracking system.

Brian, glad you like those shots.

Thank you, Joshua, I really have to push myself these days to handle such lenses without the aid of a pod, but I am still not prepared to give up........a stubborn streak, I guess.

Thank you, Tam.
