I stopped reading when I read "bocka", it made me cringe.

Very interesting piece of glass, tho. I'd like to see just how big it is compared to a more common camera digital camera, like a 5D to see really how big a lens with that characteristics can get.

One of the earliest, maybe THE earliest, article about the lens is here for those very few people who don't know much about this very famous lens, or more specifically, it's use by Kubrick.

Just out of curiosity...what if I rent it and then accidentally forget to return?..

I suppose the will remember you.
First by phone, and probably later by a special service with strong men with clubs :-)
Or you have to give first a deposit to get the lens. A big deposit, an auction for the Zeiss 50/.7 ended at 90.000 Euro.

I might rent it and film myself in a chicken suit saying "bocka bocka bocka..."

Maybe this phonetic pronunciation is better than people who spell bokeh correctly, but say it as "bouquet."

The rendering of OOF light sources is just ugly

Alex and his friends will come by to collect it on their way to the Milkbar to listen to some of the ol' Ludwig Van.

A German magazine (not one of the better) wrote the lens set with camera cost 3500 Euro (~USD 4.600) for a single day:

For that money you could buy a used 5D mkIII and EF 85mm f/1.2L and shoot with a very similar FOV and shallow DOF, in RAW no less. Toss it in the garbage when you've finished, and buy another camera/lens for the next day.

...but then you wouldn't get to absorb Kubrick's cinematography skills via osmosis as you handle the lens, which must be what they're hoping will motivate people to rent it.
