p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Letting go of the 14-24?

I've had it for a while now and it's an absolutely fantastic lens. When I'm traveling though, it's been the new 18-35g all the way lately, mostly due to its weight. I use wide-angle primarily for landscapes, with the occasional cityscape and all typically shot at f/8 or above.

When I go shooting, it's usually for an entire day and if I bring my camera, a tripod, and another lens then the 14-24 is really a backbreaker. Anyone let the 14-24 go in lieu of something lighter? Any regrets?

Whatever I don't use, goes. Have no mercy.

When I die, I'm getting buried with my 14-24.

Seriously.

You better not tell folks where the cemetery is located...

This I picked up a Rokinon 14 f2.8 for occasional WIDE stuff...
found I'd take the 17-35 f2.8 to events more often than the 14-24
Savin' the sedentary landscape stuff for my really REALLY old age
so it was no biggie to let it go. The bulbous protuberance not meant
for crowds...just sayin'

+1... I let it go for the Zeiss 21 2.8 (for use with filters) & Rokinon 14 2.8... I love the 14-24, but to each his/her needs

Well as long as you make a decision and stick with it. I bought and sold three copies of the 14-24 over the last few years

I've had mine for over a year, other than taking a couple of test shots when I got it I haven't used it.

I sold mine after about a year. I needed funds for a Canon 200 f1.8. I miss it but not enough to buy another. Jim

he,he........

Let's see. I've bought and sold the 14-24 THREE times, all for the same reason you mention (when you add in the fotodiox wonderpana filter system it really takes some space in your bag).

I've now settled on the zeiss 21(which takes my ND filters), and also the samyang 14mm for when I really need a wider angle.

Same with me.
It was my best not-used lens ever.
The 16-35 is the substitute, but the 14-24 is much better.
Every now and then when I see a nice priced second hand I feel the urge to buy it again. This year I'm able to resist that but there're still 4 months to go.

It is way down the list of lens I will ever let go of.
Well worth its weight in gold to me.
When I need/want to go light weight, I take my V1 kit.

Recently went through this process myself.

Took me a while to find the strength but I eventually sold the 14-24 and got the Siggy 35mm f1.4 which is now my fave lens by a country mile. Its astonishing and I don't regret the trade.

My 14-24 is mounted on my IR converted D70s about 90% of the time. Itīs great there and I wouldnīt want to be without that lens.

On my D300 I usually brought my Sigma 28 f1.8 which is now replaced by a Nikon 28 f2.8 Ai lens. On the D300 I could live without the 14-24 but on the IR camera itīs a must.

I'm with Steve on this one.
However, my 14-24 rarely comes off my D800E and I'm sure Steve uses his A LOT too.

If you aren't using it that often though, maybe it's time to sell it. There really is no right or wrong answer, whatever your budget and needs allow you to do.

I've been thinking of re-buying the 14-24. I sold mine and bought the new 18-35, which is nice and light and compact and pretty good. Just not spectacular like the former. It seems like underkill for the D800

I don't think I could part with my 14-24..... I will carry it to the ends of the earth, and love every moment of it.

That's exactly where I was. It is a fantastic lens, but I sold mine and use a Tamron 17-35, or a 24mm PC-E instead. No real regrets, but I'll admit I think about it now and again. In a perfect world I'd have one for the times I didn't need to carry it very far, but in the real world it is a luxury I can forgo.
