It's a terrific lens. Someone should pull the trigger if it's a reliable seller.

I honestly wish I could- but I can't justify it. Now, if it were the 70-200/2.8 VC...

I have gone through a few copies of this lens to get a properly functioning one. My experience very much mirrors TDP review of this lens, and I own 15 lenses, and only have send one other lens ever back for poor functioning. This does not come with any USA warranty.
that much said, price is hard to resist. just beware. right now Tamron has a 100 rebate, so price is really 100 less from a usa seller. if you are a student, you qualify for another 150 dollar rebate, making the usa version 1050. thats the way I would go.

Tamron has a 6 year USA warranty. I don't think it's worth buying it overseas and lose the warranty.

I've been wondering about these comparisons- does anyone have a link to a comparison between the Tamron 24-70/2.8 VC and Canon 24-70F/4L IS, be they formal or informal? Thanks!

Check out Roger's blog at lensrentals.com he did a pretty comprehensive comparison.

Thanks, but that's missing the 24-70/4L IS, along with results from the intermediate focal lengths like 35mm and 50mm, which are important to consider; you'd want to know just how much you'd be wanting to use a prime at those focal lengths instead of the zoom, depending on which zoom you chose.

And I'm not dogging on Roger, at all- I love his work, and his prose! But I'm looking for something a little more comprehensive .

John, I have gone through 5 copies of the tamron lens (long story, may make a post about it some day) and have compared it to 2 copies of 24-105, and one copy of 28-70 2.8L, that I have. I finally have what I consider to be a very good copy of the lens. that much said, here are my findings,
1. QC is simply not that impressive on this lens of the 5, one was terrible (think coke bottle), 2 very significantly decentered, and one was moderetely decentered, and centrally a bit soft at 50 and 70.
the rest are assessment of a good copy of this lens
2. 3/5 copies where very sharp in the center throughout the zoom range. there is a bit of a dip at 70, but for portrait work, I would still rate 70 2.8, centrally as excellent.
3. the lens turns in its most even performance at 24mm and 70mm. at 24 mm, it has good edges and decent corner even wide open, and stopped down, is very good, good enough for landscape.
at 70, even at the edge of aps-c frame, the lens would need to bet stopped down to f 4 to sharpen up some, but good news is, by f8, it has very good and even performance, though not stellar.
4. the lens is weakest at 35, wide open, and stopped down, where I dont feel beyond asp-c circle it get critically sharp. the good new is that the corners are good. the bad news it just never gets completely sharp other than zone A. at 50 its a little better.
5. the lens at 24 is better than 24-105, and 28-70, open, and stopped down, everywhere. at every focal length, at 2.8 and f4, at center its shaper than the other two lenses, but by smaller margin (I have a stellar copy of both of those other lenses though).
6. beyond 24, I would take the 24-105 for landscape photography. stopped down performance is better and much more even with the 24-105. this is also true about 28-70, which is fantastic, except in the very extreme corners. in fact, in zone B (say just beyond the crop circle) at 35, 50, and 70, both 24-105 and 28-70, have a slightly better performance at f4-5.6, than the tamron has at f8.
7. Autofocus on a 5d3, is decided slower than my 24-105, which is no speed demon. the lens struggles tracking moderate speed moving kids. it is also more prone to AF errors even with stationary objects.
Now, owning over 15 lenses, a 5d3, having taken 200K images over the last 5 years, and having tried 5 different copies of the tamron, I am fairly certain that my assessment is neither due to user error, or just having a bum sample. The digital picture, also had about as much luck with this lens, until tamron send him a copy (I am sure one of their best ones) for his test.
Now, I will still keep the lens. for one, I have invested so much time and energy to find a good copy. for two, I would be primarily be using it for shooting people, where the lens performs very well when it focuses properly. it has a vc which is awesome.
All that said, If I were to start over, I would seriously consider the canon 24-70 II

Wow so it was the 24-70 VC even that you were struggling to get to match the 24-105L? I thought you were at least talking about the old 28-75 when you were mentioning the Tamron. You must've really had some bad luck with the tamrons, since even my 28-75 did better (other than nasty weird bokeh at the edges at the long end) than all three 24-105L and most people seem to think the 24-70 VC is even better than the 28-75 (although is it). It's hard to say, but your 24-105L appeared to be perhaps a rather exceptionally good copy also. I guess copy variation is quite real and any given person and get a very different take on things.

It's weird how some like TDP appear to drop kick each tamron before testing and others have so much better luck. TDP hasn't had a single Tamron lens perform even remotely close to as well as any copy I've ever personally used. I swear they smeared vaseline over their 28-75 and decided to do the same before they tested their 70-300 VC at 300mm.

I would rate the 24-70 performance in every way better than 28-75. I would also say, but itself, when not compared to other lenses, I would rate 24-70 a very good lens, as it has good central sharpness, and is not soft stopped down anywhere (just not tack sharp). its not like 17-40 mushy corner at 17, or even my 28-70L at corners. However, looking at photozone and dpreivew tests, I was simply expecting a little more. even in tdp test, the tamron does better than the 23-105, but I think he had a bad copy
I think, in the field, as long as AF works reasonably well, I will be happy with this lens.

This is a good deal but I would rather wait for the upcoming Sigma 24-70 2.0 OS which will be the mother of all lenses if they can deliver on this one.

That's a really big 'if', though. Unlike the 18-35/1.8, this is actually a unique design, though I think Sigma has a pretty good chance of at least surpassing Tamron here. They'll have to provide a pretty consistent performance, though, exceeding the 24-70/4 and 24-70/2.8 VC at least.

The Canon has been on my future-purchase list in preference to the much cheaper Tamron but a deal like this has me reconsidering. The price gap just widened another $300-400.

I hope they keep increasing the pressure on the Canon 24-70 II IS. More wood to boiler, James!!! She's shaking like a leaf now! Sooner or later that price has got to blow!

I'll be waiting to pick one up when she does.
