p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Nikon Prime Lenses

Here is the deal, I have a D800, I get a rewards card from B&H for 50 dollars, i don't live in USA but I have someone traveling to NY in a few days. I do a lot of wildlife and traveling.I like to travel with my 70-200 vr, a wide (usually the 28 2.8 and the 50 1.8. I would like to buy another prime and Iīm looking for some advise. I already tried the 20mm and didnīt like it very much, I also have a 35-70 2.8 and I just sold a 20-35 2.8.
My choices are (donīt want to spend more than 400-500 $):
50mm 1.8G
50mm 1.4G
50mm 1.4D
35mm 2.0
micro 60mm 2.8 (I would like to give a chance to the micro world)

Any help about those lenses will be really helpful. Thanks

Unless you want to go macro, I'd say the best on your list is the 50/1.8G.

Is there something that your current 50 is lacking? Which 50/1.8 do you have?

Between those choices pick up the 60mm f2.8 AF-D.

All the 50mm lenses you listed wonīt make much of a difference compared to the 50 f1.8 you already own. The 35 isnīt really that good, but the 60mm AF-D micro Nikkor is pin sharp, can be used as a standard prime for most purposes and does macro. By the looks of it you have the rest covered with the 28, the 50 f1.8 and the zoom.

For many years I used 50mm Nikon macro lenses. Then I picked up a 100 macro, amazing difference, you can still get close but you aren't bumping into your subject. I know it's more than you want to spend but consider it.

It would be nice to have the 60mm macro, I have a manual macro with the 35-70 2.8 and It would be a great upgrade.

iīve heard that the 105mm from Nikon is the best, the problem is the price, I already burn my credit card with the d800,the 70-200 vrII so 500 already is a way too much. Maybe in the future

The 60 2.8G AF-S is an exceptional lens, actually the sharpest I ever used.

If you want a 105mm Nikkor, you may want to consider a classic, the 105 f/2.5 AI manual focus lens. Add an extension tube and it doubles as a macro lens. B&H has used gear for sale and at the moment have a copy of this lens rated "9" available for $199...

This remains a favorite among Nikon shooters and a great many folks on the Manual Focus Nikon Glass thread are using that lens on their DSLR cameras, including the D800 and D600. You might want to take a walk on the wild side... AND save a bundle...

Thanks,Grindhal, could be a very good choice, actually I prefer a 105mm macro instead of new 60mm with autofocus. iīm between the 50 1.4 (Iīll sell my 50mm 1.8) and the macro. Iīve heard the 50mm 1.4 is an amazing lens for my d800.

@cgrindahl

I hope the OP doesn't mind two questions.

What extension tube would you recommend? Also, would the extension provide 1:1?

Don't want to go off topic but don't buy vello tubes!! I don't like them at all!! it doesn't hold my macro lense well (200 nikon macro lense) so I loose light. It rotates at the lens mount. For tubes, kenko seems to be the only way but they are expensive! But buy once and do it right the first time.

For macro, Manual Focus is the way to go. The lens Curtis is describing sounds great, but you can do better on the price. I found my 105/2.5 AI for $125 locally at a flea market. It isn't up to Curtis' standards, his lenses must be pristine, but the glass is perfect and the price was right.

For the 50, are you referring to the 50/1.4G? If so, I would stick to the 1.8AFD. I have not owned the 1.4, but I do own the 1.8. From all accounts, the 1.4 is not a very good lens, while the 1.8 is very sharp with fast AF. The OOF can be a bit funky at times wide open however.

If you'd like to get a 50/1.4, you should look at the Sigma. I own one myself, really great lens. Some have had focusing issues, I've not had a problem. You should be able to find one used for around the cost of the 50/1.4G. Read some reviews and see what you think.

I vote for 50 f/1.8. Best bang for the buck lens out there. I got mine for like $200. Second choice would be 60mm macro, but it's bulkier. The bulk and price are the only major turn offs for me. Otherwise, the optics will be extremely nice on that one. If I didn't care about size/weight/price, I would go with the 60.

I own the 50 1.8G and this lens is super sharp on my D700 - plus it is inexpensive at around $200 US. I've heard great things about the 60G (e.g., very sharp) but seems like an odd focal length especially for macro work, well at least for the type of macro shooting I would do (e.g., dragonflies, insects).

The 50 1.4G. I love it. It a great, fast, sharp, and ghtweight lines for travel especially for indoor stuff like restaurants, etc. The bokeh is beautiful and a must better build than the 1.8.

I use my 60 for other things than just macro, I like not being limited by how close you can get up on things. It has replaced my 50 1.8 G- not a huge difference to me in focal length- for sure bigger, but so much nicer. It would be great to have a 50 that could do what this lens does, Sigma ART? Oh yeah.

I've had both the 50/1.8 and 1.4Gs and can't tell any difference in build quality... the 1.4 seems overpriced for what it is. It has two more shutter leafs.
