For macro, Manual Focus is the way to go. The lens Curtis is describing sounds great, but you can do better on the price. I found my 105/2.5 AI for $125 locally at a flea market. It isn't up to Curtis' standards, his lenses must be pristine, but the glass is perfect and the price was right.
For the 50, are you referring to the 50/1.4G? If so, I would stick to the 1.8AFD. I have not owned the 1.4, but I do own the 1.8. From all accounts, the 1.4 is not a very good lens, while the 1.8 is very sharp with fast AF. The OOF can be a bit funky at times wide open however.
If you'd like to get a 50/1.4, you should look at the Sigma. I own one myself, really great lens. Some have had focusing issues, I've not had a problem. You should be able to find one used for around the cost of the 50/1.4G. Read some reviews and see what you think.
