For the past couple months we've had some visitors from out of state staying a few miles from my house. They quickly became local celebrities and then decided to settle down and raise a family. The Scissor-tailed Flycatchers don't normally stray much farther east than Texas, but this pair and a couple others have shown up here in Georgia in the past few years. Quite fortuitously, I am only about 5 minutes away from their nest so I was able to visit frequently.
They built their nest in the middle of a trio of transformers on a power pole 30 feet from the highway. This made it really easy to watch them throughout, but didn't help on the aesthetic side of things! Anyway, try to pretend that all the steel and cables you see here are pretty tree branches and stuff!
Thanks for looking,
John
1. Greeting the wife
2. "See? I told you he did some of the work!"
3. I was there when they fledged! First one out of the nest.
4. "Dad we're still hungry!"
5. Now he's just showing off!
6. Dad in his prime. Those pretty tail feathers didn't last long once the babies hatched.
