First of a three-part series: a wild sea lion on the rock jetty near San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf.
I believe this is a male California sea lion- a slightly smaller species than the northern Steller's sea lions that are typically found in Alaska.
Note the external ear: one of the good ways to distinguish sea lions from true seals.

Lying lions. Maybe they lie too. If their ears were burning, at least we'd notice, unlike those sneaky externally ear-less seals. Nice shot Charlie.

Thanks Ken, Ron and Birdie.
"Externally ear-less?" Jolly good, Ken .
Didn't we both work at the same branch of the U.S. Department of Redundancy Department a while back?
Or perhaps it was another important branch of the government?
Or perhaps you're a marketing type with a strange-but-funny sense of humor?

If there ever critters who knew how to nap regardless of what goes on around them it's large pinnipeds! Nice shot of this guy doing what he does best Charlie
