p.2 #1 · Magic Lantern adds 14-stop Dual ISO for EOS 6D

The very original version of it that I saw had really nasty aliasing and moire. It seems things are a bit cleaned-up now, but I still think that some stuff will be sub-optimal other than the DR but I guess it might be worth it now at times. Have to test it to see if wonky banding and so on happens or not.

It sure looks interesting, but it remains to be seen how 'useful' it is. Post-processing could make it amazing, to be sure, but special demosaicing will have to be done to make the most of dual-ISO.

Why don't they do that for the 1D-X?

I'm OK with my 1DX - as is.

1 less expensive camera at a time. You can probably donate one for them to experiment on too

Does this dual ISO application takes away 100 ISO smoothness?

So, you have to keep a fresh copy of ML on any CF or SD card? What about reformatting the card?

Use the "Erase all images" function in the in-camera menus, or prepare your card with Magic Lantern after you have formatted it.

If you have read this thread, you will by now know that it in fact does not alter the installed Canon firmware.

Yes. So far, so good. I suspect as long as ML keeps their hands off the 1D-series, Canon will be OK with them.

So, I'll ask again. Worthwhile for photo-only users? Have no desire to shoot video.

It really depends upon what you think "worthwhile" means.

Some of the features for photo use:
- in camera intervalometer
- bulb timer
- advanced bracketing
- advanced display settings
- advanced WB settings
- zebras
- focus peak
- advanced spot meter

These are all for live view.

But, I'm not the expert here. Just trying to learn.
I just started using it and I see a lot of possible usage for landscape photography.
For me it's worth the time and I'll be sending a donation to the ML guys.

Absolutely, you'll love it.

ML was originally developed for video use, but they quickly expanded their vision and efforts to exposing any and all useful capabilities that they find in Canon's cameras.

For instance, focus peaking and RAW histograms are incredible tools for still shooters. Focus peaking makes manually focusing in Live View much quicker, while RAW histograms show you the true effects of your current exposure that you cannot get with the JPEG based histogram that the camera shows you.

And there's plenty more! I'd recommend trying it out if there's a build ready for your camera. Loading it up doesn't do anything by itself, and you can peruse the options in the ML software with ease before trying any of them out.

Has anybody actually used the dual ISO functionality for stills and compared them with native raw and/or scrutinized large prints? Does it hold up to practical use, let's say in landscape photography where expanded DR would be most useful? I realize that resolution drops in shadows and highlights but that's probably preferable to lifted shadows with noise or lack of detail due to NR. Thanks!

+1, after two months thousands miles away in hot tropical areas - the canon DR issue has eaten more than half of my shots. I need a better DR cam for quick snap while you can't control the shooting environment. I have been tired waiting a better DR cam from canon for awhile now; so another bump for Friedolin's question.

Just following up to see if anyone has tested the RAW capabilities of the Dual ISO function for still image?? Everyone says its great but comparative evidence is scarce on the web
