p.1 #1 · Real Madrid v Inter Milan

Real Madrid vs Inter Milan, August 10th, played indoors at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis. Unfortunately most of the action was at the opposite end of the field during the first half. None the less, here are my best shots of the day.

Nice shots - which 120-300 were you using?

#3 is your strongest #4 IMO is a non-keeper. Last one probably stronger if cropped portrait and centered on player with ball. Players on the left pull eye away from the action on this one. Also agree with Carl, the WB on all is definitely on the cool side and could use a bump.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I've heard that about my WB on other photos, so obviously this is something I need to work on. My normal process is to narrow the photos down to best shots then process them in Lightroom. My very first step is WB, when I hit auto. Then I proceed to Tone, (normally auto), I bump the Clarity and the Vibrance slightly.

As for the photos being cool, I noticed on the Temp, they are all running at about 3900. So, I bumped them to closer to 5000 and have posted them side by side. I'd love to hear what people think about the change and which is more appealing.

Photo 4 was there not for ultimate peek action, but his eyes drew me in with the focus he had on the ball.

Photo 5, I had intentionally left the players in as I felt they offered a sense of required action compared to an isolated player doing a very acrobatic play mid-air.

John: A definite magenta cast to the original images (though 4 and 5 aren't bad), and I'd say the re-worked ones are too warm. It can be frustrating as hell to try and find that WB sweet spot when it's off-target out-of-camera. I think #2 is your strongest image, though it's more 'stock' than 'high-impact.' I would re-frame it to decrease the space on the left side of the image with a 4x5 crop, with a little more room to the right if that's necessary. I also agree with Matt re: #5--if that shot has a chance, it's got to be isolation on the player with the ball. For me, #2 suffers from the angle that excludes most of one player battling for the header, and the background player who is more a distraction than anything. #4 doesn't work for me because the timing is off--either the peak has passed or it hasn't happened yet. Must have been a fun match to shoot!

Thanks Russ. Here it is recropped to a 4x5 and WB adjusted for the ball (using the eyedropper tool) and slightly moved right. I have to agree it's not peak action. But I definitely appreciate the CC you guys have put out for me to think about.

John: Hope you don't mind my playing around with the color. A bit more yellow/red trying to move away from the magenta tint. As I said, though, this kind of thing can drive you buggy and make you wonder whether your eyes are up to the task! (May be too much yellow, but I think the magenta problem is solved! ).
