p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sunny outdoor wedding in the UK???

Some from a surprisingly sunny wedding at Slaugham place in the UK. The venue is basically a marquee in some really cool old ruins. When the sun shines it's brill, last year I got rained on and it was probably one of the most miserable wedding's I've shot.

Edit: There're quite a lot of pictures so how about this for a new game - I'd love it if everyone commenting on this thread could pick 2 pictures they really like and explain why/what they'd do to make them stronger. Then pick 2 pictures they think are weaker and again let me know why/how any tips on improving...

Anyway on with this year in the sun.

Your flash stuff is good but your natural light portraits are WAY better. So much more emotion etc. I can really get a feel for the couple in them.
Great set

Cheers Doug, I've always been known for my flash stuff but I've been working a lot more recently on the natural light as well.

How about this for a new game, I'd love it if everyone commenting on this thread could pick 2 pictures they really like and explain why/what they'd do to make them stronger. Then pick 2 pictures they think are weaker and again let me know why/how any tips on improving...

Some good stuff in here Alex. The groom actually kind of looks like you if you ask me... Maybe I'm crazy.

Here's a few thoughts on individual images:

The bride's angles change tremendously when she elongates her chin and when she recesses it. The left photo is a great angle for her and the right makes her look a good bit heavier. I'd try to recognize that angle and do what you can to help her, especially during the portraits:

This might just be me, but this photo looks like the bride is getting bullied by 3 girls. I think it's because they're so close to her and so much taller. Unless you were intentionally trying to play on the height differences, I would have probably tried to neutralize that a bit:

Wow, great light in this spot! I think that all the spots that aren't light beams take away from this though. I think you could cut 1/3 off the left, 1/3 off the right and 1/3 off the bottom and have a much stronger shot. I think the ground in particular really cheapens it:

I appreciate the effort on your light painting stuff, although it's just not my cup of tea. I think that someday that will be looked at like we now look at selective color.

Thanks Tony, I feel like such a noob for not noticing the neck thing in 7. You're quite right, she's a lovely bride and pretty curvy so I was concentrating on her tummy and totally forgot the neck. Doh!

I hadn't thought of that about the bullying, I'd thought she looked more like a ring leader of fun. I can see how you'd think that with the height though. I did try to even up the levels but the second bridesmaid was wearing really massive heals! I had her popping her hip and leaning as much as possible to loose some height but I just didn't know what to do beyond that. Putting her on the end didn't seem to work either, any other ideas?

I know what you mean about the light painting as well, it's a love hate thing for me. I know 3 years ago I'd have been weak at the knees for it and loved it. Right now I can't decide if I love or hate it. I'm pretty sure it's going to date but at the moment I'm leaning towards love. (Just to give you some context, the couple from the start really loved my dramatic shots and were really vocal on wanting a 'one of a kind' dramatic style portrait. I think it delivered on that.)

ps. I guess I can see the resemblance to the groom, I think I've got more hair though
