This is one reason why forum-based sites (in general) are falling in usage today. The admins are just people, there for their own reasons. It only 'works' as long as its mutually beneficial, and when it stops being that way, the crowd starts to go elsewhere.

It used to be that these sites provided a place where questions could be answered for the common or general users, but today either social sites or general word-of-mouth have pretty much taken over.

There are a lot of civil, smart, and thoughtful people here. There are, however, a few who are not. That's what the "hide me" button is for. It reminds me to not reply to them any more. Overall, this has made FM forums, especially those focused on gear, a lot more pleasant. ;-)

A few days ago I encountered a short thread here in which every single post was a hidden one! I opened the messages up and, sure enough, was reminded of why I had hidden the participants.

Sadly, the Canon gear forum does have a contingent of members who have a consistently poor record with making a positive (let alone creative or original) contribution to the forum, be it technically, or by virtue of their photographs, or thru support/encouragement/counsel offered to other members.

Invariably, the only time we hear from them is when they feel like criticising or bagging someone.

I do not quite understand what their reason might be for continuing with their membership here......I doubt it is photography.
Ignoring that (fortunately) smallish crowd is probably the best strategy.

Yes, that is also something Toronto's mayor should switch to.

Access: Are forums really losing traffic? The ones I frequent seem to be humming along with more members and more posting than at any other time I can remember (granted, that's anecdotal on my part). Some of the boards here are more interesting to me than others, but those that are interesting continue to be quite useful. If forums are really losing traffic-- that's actually the kind of thing I'd be interested in seeing proof of for reasons outside this particular discussion. Would love to see some numbers in this thread or via PM!

Petkal: As long as I've been tuning in here, the Canon forum-- like every board/forum-- has always been comprised of mainly constructive folks alongside some (usually temporarily lived) agitators. But it feels, subjectively, pretty constructive at the moment compared to certain periods in the past that were more turbulent.

Yes forums in general are losing traffic, even this site (though not taking as bad of a hit as some).

If you want to see numbers just above "Topics" click on Archives.
Go back to 2010 or so. Just looking on the first page, you'll notice most threads have more than 20 posts and more than 3000 views.

Compared to 2012 or current, a dropoff in use is quite evident. Today at least a considerable number of threads on the first page have less than 20 posts, and the far majority of threads on the first page have less than 3000 views.

And that's just the 'gear talk' section of this site, the presentation boards have lost even more traffic.

In general forum sites just aren't attracting a lot of new users, or users that stick around for more than a few posts.

Sounds nice but I think forum traffic has largely fallen off due to competition from more interesting and entertaining things to do on the internet, e.g., social media, streaming video, shopping and, of course, porn. Typing slow mo conversations is pretty old skool for all save for us OF.

Yeah that is another big factor, esp. for the people who were bored at their desk job (work) and used to spend time at their work browsing / posting on the forums. Now they have a lot of other distractions to keep them occupied; amazon, facebook, youtube, assorted web or online games, etc. The only thing that keeps forums alive is that often times they are too obscure to be blocked by workplace filters, but even this is losing out as people are now just bringing their tablets and smartphones to work.

And

Thread drift alert!

That sounds anecdotal to me. I tried a quick search, and all I could find is something saying that Internet Brands reported worldwide forum traffic to be increasing.

I'd love to see REAL statistics that show worldwide forum traffic going one way or another. It's hard to imagine that with so many new people getting online each day-- that global forum traffic is receding.

How is looking at real numbers anecdotal? The only forum I'm on where traffic has increased is VO, and that's because the underlying movement has also grown. The rest have lost a considerable amount of traffic, this includes hobby forums, pet forums, extreme sport forums, local / social forums, etc. You can do the same for any forum you are on, it generally only takes a quick look or search to see how traffic has fallen off within the last 2-4 years. The ones where traffic has actually grown are few and far between, and this typically coincides with a rapidly growing pool of potential users.

Not only has the usage dropped off significantly, but forums have also lost their prominence in regards to real life. For instance forum sites that used to be the go-to place for local meetups, activities, and information have been all but replaced by facebook, meetup, and the like. In things like photography, forum sites used to be the go-to place for new users who had questions or needed advice. No longer true, at least not as common as it once was.
