Thanks for the constructive critique, Jonathan. Correct on both counts.
Not so sure the exposure is too much on the first, perhaps a little fill light in her face would help, but too much brighter may blow out the highlights in her hair where it is backlit. I hope to see more from you here.

Thanks Douglas. I agree that the lighting/exposure is tricky, at least for me.

I like both of these images, although the second seems to have a color cast to it.
In the first- the girl is not wearing everyday clothes; what is the celebration?

Hi Charles,
Thanks for taking the time to send your comments twice.
The second image had tungsten light overhead and window light to his back so you're seeing that nasty combination.
The celebration may have been their Spring Festival (as these were taken in April) but I'm not certain of that. My communication skills were definitely lacking although her parents seemed very honored and proud to have someone ask to take their daughter's picture.
