p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Rokkor 58, zuiko 50, or FL55?

Ok so I am looking for a fast 50-58mm lens to use on my kodak slr/c and I have narrowed it down to these three lenses:

1. Minolta rokkor 58mm f1.2
2. Olympus zuiko 50mm f1.2
3. Canon FL55mm f1.2

I know that the rokkor might not be the sharpest but has the smoothest bokeh.
How much does it cost to convert the rokkor into Canon mount and would it infinity focus on a kodak slr/c?
Are there any differences between the rubber and the metal focus ring versions of the rokkor?
How does the canon FL compare to zuiko in terms of sharpness?
Which lens would be your choice?

I just received an MC Rokkor-X 58/1.2 and I'm waiting for a Leitax mount kit, to let me put it on my EOS bodies. I assume this approach would work for your kodak slr/c. The Leitax cost me $93.65 CA, including shipping. Call it $91.00 US.

Leitax, http://www.leitax.com/Rokkor-lens-for-Canon-cameras.html

I also use Leitax mounts on my Contax Zeiss and wide Olympus OM lenses. It's a great product.

You have an interesting short list. I haven't tried any FL or FD lenses, but the Oly 50/1.2 that you include is a peach! I've owned the Oly 50/1.2, Oly 55/1.2, and SMC Pentax 50/1.2. I've also used the Nikkor 50/1.2. Of these lenses, I think the Oly 50/1.2 is best. It has the least 'glow' wide open, and is very sharp when you stop down a bit. Plus, it's very small.

I sold the Oly in a moment of weakness a couple of years ago, and so I just picked up the Rokkor to see what it's all about.

I also have and often use the Canon EF 50/1.2L (which I think is better than all of the manual focus, ultra-fast 50mm and 55mm Alt lenses that I've owned), and so I look forward to comparing it with the Rokkor. Not because I'd use them on the same occasions; just because.

P.S. the SMC Pentax-A 50/1.2 (Alpha) in your list looks very interesting. I likes Pentax, but I have gradually shifted towards Mamiya 645, Zeiss (Contax and ZE), and Olympus OM for my preferred Alt lenses (not counting Fujifilm XF autofocus lenses as being "Alt"). Based on my experience, I decided to stop looking for a reasonably-priced SMCP-A 50/1.2, and get a reasonably-priced Rokkor 58/1.2

I also read one of the members here does the conversion or sells the conversion kit. I think his name is Jim if I'm not mistaken.
I guess the end result is the same as the leitax conversion.

Yeah I had the pentax A 50/1.2 a while ago for my a900 but sold it when I sold all my alpha gear.
It was definitely a sharp lens but I wasn't a fan of its bokeh. too busy for my taste.
I need to update my profile. it's really outdated lol.

Let me know how the rokkor compares to your old oly 50/1.2.
Thanks.

That would be FM member JimBuchanan. I didn't even think about JB - short attention span, I guess.

Jim CLA'd my Rokkor, great guy to deal with.

Out of your list, I'd recommend the rokkor. The special Zuiko 50 is the f2.0 macro, and the special Canon 50 is the 55 ASPHERICAL (note the aspherical moniker, it makes a big difference). The Rokkor is great, sharper at f1.2 than you might expect. I liked mine, but sold it and that cash is now in the Zuiko macro or my Thorens or something like that.

i have both the rokkor and the canon FL 55/1.2. the canon is sharper wide open, particularly at closer focus distances. i'm selling the canon though because i like overall look of the rokkor better (color, bokeh, indescribable magic) and never use the canon anymore.

If you didn't like the Pentax bokeh, then I don't think you'll find much to love in the Canon's bokeh until it's stopped down considerably. The colors on the Canon are pretty lifeless without quite a bit of massaging. Which isn't to say I don't like the lens quite a bit for some things. It is very sharp and the lower contrast draw can make for very pleasing B&W conversions, but I also prefer the Rokkor as a general purpose fast lens.

I have:
OM 55/1.2
Canon FL 55/1.2
Rokkor MC 58/1.2
EF 50/1.2
Nikkor SC 55/1.2

The Rokkor is my fave.
I still want the FL 58/1.2, FD SSC 55/1.2 Aspherical, SMC A 50/1.2, Hexinon 57/1.2, Nikkor AIS 50/1.2, & 58/1.2 noct, Canon LTM 50/1.2, CV 35/1.2.... Yeah I'm a speed junky.

Rokkor 58/1.2 is the most interesting lens of the three IMO.

I think that with these old 5X f/1.2 lenses-- copy variation is a bigger issue than brand when it comes to certain qualities.

In great copies, the Canon is the sharpest of the bunch. The Rokkor glows more, and more people prefer the bokeh. Both lenses show better bokeh at f/2 than f/1.2. Both glow (which isn't always a good thing).

I own the Canon FL 55 f/1.2. I probably would have gone for the Rokkor during the first craze around here, except that the price skyrocketed (and I was anchored to the original pre-craze price), and it turned out that copy variation was huge-- after the initial euphoria, a number of people were disappointed with not getting output like Paul's best-of-the-bunch lens. Now, I wouldn't trade my FL for the Rokkor; preference for drawing qualities are subjective, and I'm wed to the FL after using it for a few years.

You can't really go wrong. I'd suggest looking at images made with the various lenses... and then deciding based on which drawing styles you like. If you don't really care, go for what's cheapest.

If you found the Pentax A's bokeh too busy, I guess you won't like the Zuiko's one either. I never did a head-to-head comparison, but always had the impression that the Zuiko's bokeh was busier than the Pentax's (wide open, that is, can't tell about stopped down. Then again, the Rokkor is not that smooth wide open either, but at f2 it shines)

Nevermind, just did a bokeh comparison for the Pentax A 50/1.2, the Zuiko 50/1.2 and the Rokkor 58/1.2.
Out of curiosity, I also threw the Revuenon 55/1.2 (rebadged Cosina), the Porst 55/1.2 and the Zuiko 55/1.2 in the mix. Set them to 3m and 1m by scale and shot at f/1.2 and f/2 respectively.
Unfortunately there was a little bit of wind so the background is not always identical, but I think it gives you a good idea nevertheless.

Thank you for posting your results. I have a question about the focusing method; are the scales with all these lenses and adapters reliable in your experience? If one lens really was focused at 0.9m and another one at 1.25m, for example, the test isn't really valid.
Their rendering style of background OOF areas can perhaps be judged pretty well. Something in the focal plane would have helped judging glove and CA also.

I have owned most of the lenses you tested. Out of all the super fast around 50mm lenses I have kept the FL 58/1.2 only. Great glow and good resolution - a personal preference I guess as I think I could have lived with anyone of them. Hmm... maybe not with the Zuikos which are a little life-less as I recall it now. The Rokkor I sold quickly due to the amount of focus shift. Oh well, the FL58/1.2 is far from perfect, maybe it's just where settled.

With the adapters I use the lenses hit infinity spot-on, so the scales should be correct (if printed correctly by the manufacturer in the first place which I assume). However, the scales are not detailed enough to make precise adjustments, so even though I tried, there is probably a bigger difference in focus than if had focused on something using liveview.

it certainly seems like copy variation should be bigger in a lens this old, but i've seen shockingly little in 5 rokkors (metal and rubber focus ring) and 3 canon FLs. yellowed glass does make a very noticeable difference in color, contrast, and transmission though.

eSchwab wrote:

yes, but there will be a mirror collision at infinity and the liveview work around doesn't work on nikon the way it does on canon.

I think we can be sure focusing by scale is less exact than using Live View...
Your adapters are better than mine though, I can focus somewhat beyond infinity with nearly all of them. As you had nothing in the focus plane - what is your impression about glow (as in veiling flare)? How would you order the lenses with regards to glow wide open?

First, it's not LTM, it's a special mount that would need to be modded (or I think there might be an adapter?) but
I wouldn't want to modify a rare lens like it, plus it's huge, and 1.2 is fast enough for me with the ISO's available now days.
