Canon CPN weekly Tips and Tricks

Canon CPN Europe created Tips and Tricks page with invaluable weekly tips to ensure you maximise your use of Canon cameras, lenses & accessories.

Here are the direct links to the Canon 5D Mark III and Canon EOS-1D X Tips and Tricks pages.

Same tips work for many cameras. Here is an example:

Use Safety Shift to retain creative control

Safety Shift has long been a feature found in the Custom Functions of many EOS models. It is designed to allow some level of over-ride when using Tv or Av modes, in conditions where the light levels may change suddenly.

A subject moving from deep shadow to bright sunlight, for example, may lead to incorrect exposure if the shutter speed or aperture cannot adjust far enough to compensate for the change in light levels.

With Safety Shift on, the camera will adjust either your shutter speed or aperture (depending on whether you’re in Av or Tv mode) to ensure you achieve the correct exposure.

If, however, you are using a particular shutter speed or aperture to achieve a specific look to your images, the EOS 5D Mark III, EOS-1D X, EOS-1D Mark IV and EOS-1D Mark III DSLRs offer the ability to adjust the exposure using ISO instead.

This allows you to retain control of your shutter speed or aperture and thereby maintain the look you were after, using the extensive ISO ranges of the cameras to get the correct exposure.

As did my Nikon FA from 1983. The Canon auto ISO without exposure compensation is a joke, too.
