p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Lens options (Not L series) for 70D (UK)

I'm likely buying the new 70D when it becomes available, but it got me thinking about lens options.

I already have the 50MM f/1.8, the 100mm f/2.8 macro, and a 70-200 L f/4.

So there are options for what to buy...

1) Body only. This means adding a lens of choice up to a budget of 320...

2) With the 18-55 IS STM, which would leave money for a 2nd hand extender for use on the 70-200L...

3) With the 18-135 IS STM, which would be the maximum spend (1,400)

If I was to add a lens, which would be likely to give the best results regarding IQ, within 320 either new or 2nd hand? This lens would have to offer the option of landscapes, though I'm not a landscaper, so wouldn't need anything less than 18mm at the widest end, either EF, or EF-S would do.

Opinions please?

Paul.

personally if you can push the buget id try and find a 17-55IS (I did and love it )
they typically go for around 500 used .

or
the 15-85 is a great lens also . tend to be slightly cheaper used (that the 17-55) . a 15-85 - 70-200/4 would be a great set

the other choice is the sigma 17-70 . the just replaced HSM is very good, and I dont see the new 'C' series (i think its C) being any worse .

really as a lens like this is going to be a mainstay of your camera setup I would definatly not 'cheap' out on it

as an example heres a 15-85 for 38 9http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/used-equipment/used-lenses/used-canon-fit-lenses/canon-ef-s-15-85mm-f/3.5-5.6-is-usm-2/

same place has a bunch of 17-55's for between 500 and 600

they are not the cheapest around (not the most expensive either) but they are pretty decent guys

Thanks so far Ian for your thought, it's a good starting point.

The lens which is my mainstay is my macro lens - 90% of everything I do is macro.

I'd skip the extender, it does not play well on the dual pixel live AF. In fact, I'd just wait for the reviews.

I hear you there , my mainstay lens seems to the 120-300 OS . I mean i probably wouldnt notice if it became stuck on my 7D

but if your not going to shoot this lens that often I would probably go with the 18-55 STM . its little and light so offers you a lightweight carry option if need it . IQ is very good . its also very cheap as a kit lens so probably is a bit of a no brainer anyway .
then if (when) you decide you want the better faster/longer lens you can then get something like the 17-55 or 15-85

I'd recommend the 18-135 STM- it's not much larger than the new 18-55 and it has a decent usable range, and would make a great walk-around and video lens.

And I don't get the extender comment. Why would that matter? Wouldn't the OP be much more likely to be using the viewfinder and the dedicated phase AF sensor when using an extender with a tele-zoom?

If you can push your budget a little a 17-55 IS is pretty reasonably priced in the used/refurb market these days. I would also consider the new Sig 18-35 1.8.

Yeah the 18-35 is an option , but its still pre order here (the OP is UK) and 799 . But I notice WEX has a discount on it which takes it down to 649 . Strange as its unusually see discounts on pre order from them

Also there is quite a significant gap between 35 and 70mm . I can just about put up with the gap between my 17-55 a and 80-200 although its still quite large .

I'd likely use the viewfinder...

Where did you get this info about it not playing well on the duel pixel AF? I can find nothing about on Canon's sites.

I must have missed that as well . but i will say its unlikely you will find that info on any canon site

I agree also that i would be unlikely to be using a TC'ed 70-200 in Live View / Video also

17-55 2.8 IS > 15-85 > 18-55 STM, but if you are shooting video go for 18-55 STM.

What I would have recommended too.

Third party is the way to go. There is also the Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4 OS worth looking at.

Yeah the sig 17-70 is a good bet , cheap on the used market as well .hsm and OS at a good price

As for the 17-50 non VC I know it gets alot of love round here for being a great cheaper 2.8 kit lens option . I've never used that lens but I picked up its bigger FF bro for indoor use when my 24-105 couldn't cut it indoors when the subject was moving (shutter speed) . Well I have to say it was a waste of time/money , indoors that lens (maybe its just mine) couldn't achieve focus if it was given a tape measure the f4 lens gets good focus in much darker light than the Tamron can ever get . Outside it does focus well but has lots of issues with stuff that moves

As I say it maybe just that I picked up a lemon but it sort of put me off 3rd party basic AF lenses , by basic AF I mean non USM type AF drives . A friend of mine just picked up a cheap sigma 28-70/2.8 (non HSM) and the AF on that is iffy as well .

Hi Paul,

I'm going to add another voice that you give the Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC MACRO OS HSM | C your serious considerations. It's just a few Pounds above budget but the fine (tested below) optical performance and the f/2.8-4 aperture (vs. the f/3.5-5.6 maximum apertures of the two kit lenses) should warrant some of your attention...

Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM | C review: Digital Photography Review:
http://www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/sigma-17-70mm-f2-8-4-os-hsm

...FWIW, I loved this lens's earlier non-OS incarnation back in my 30D days, and it looks like Sigma has continued doing its homework on improving this configuration over the intervening years.

My 2-Pence for today,
Jimmy G

Thank you again - it's bewildering really.

After all this, I may have to decide when I get to the shop on the day of purchase!

17-70 C or 18-135 STM- if that 17-70 C had been out, I would have picked that up over the 15-85 (nice as that lens is). Crop sensors really do need that light to keep the shutter speeds fast enough while keeping out of the high-ISO ranges as much as possible!
