I have to say that I have far more regrets in not having the right equipment with me when the sky breaks loose with a spectacular sunrise or sunset, or a bison, bighorn, or bear walks right across my path, rather than the regret of temporary muscle pain when carrying my best equipment and instead am caught with my basic motorcycle travel kit (D7100 & 24-85mm, or even P7000). Of course it's a matter of what your plans are, and what you will photograph, but if you are serious, then use the best you can afford and carry for the job at hand. Don't be redundant, and use what you use. Unless you're a collector. But if you are redundant sell something, and replace with an item that's better.
As far as the "cue" analogy, or golf clubs, skis, what have you... Don't kid yourself, there is a huge difference. There are reasons some cameras cost $3,300 versus $550. Or record turntables (from $50 to $100,000 which I'm now researching, they look the same but aren't). The best equipment you can afford will help lift your talents up, the end result is what counts.

As someone who used to be very, very serious about pool long ago I have to comment on your analogy. (Although I can't play at all anymore because of my aged eyes and lack of practice).
The cue matters. A player's cue becomes an extension of them. It's polished and smoothed with 0000 steel wool until it slides through the back of the hand and your bridge effortlessly, nothing sticks. The cue weight too is also an important consideration, a 15 versus 17, 19 or 21 cue can make a huge difference (and mistake) in your shot results. So does straightness, and the tip... And for some, even the color. It can become an obsession. Each player finds their perfect cue.
Then the table... there's nothing like a beautiful slate, green cloth 9' billiard table, perfectly set up, leveled, vacuumed & brushed under nice lighting. When everything is working right, you can play for 10 hours straight or longer...
The analogy is like saying Tiger Woods takes my crappy golf clubs and beats me at golf. It means nothing. Fact, a better cue makes you a better player, unless you are at the beginner's level.
