My best travel kit... D600 + kit lens, with 16-35, ZF 100/70-300 VR if I need more range or I feel and I could bear the weight.

Bare minimum kit? probably Sony RX-100 or NEX-6/7 but so far I have done any overseas trip without a DSLR yet.

The only prime lens I take when traveling is the 16mm f2.8 fisheye lens. Otherwise the zoom lenses provide more picture angles and with fewer lens changes less dust gets inside the camera.

If I took only one lens it would be the 24-70mm f2.8. Only two lenses I add the 70-200mm f2.8. Third lens the 18-35mm (14-24mm f2.8 stays at home). Forth lens I take is the 16mm fisheye. The fisheye is great for interiors.

On trips where the distances will be great between me an my subjects I take the 80-400mm instead of the 70-200mm lens. Examples include casual wildlife shots and shooting from a boat, both places where the 200-400mm f4 lens is unwieldy to say the least.

A lens I do not have enough use for to own but would be a very good travel lens is the newish Nikon 24-120mm 4f VR lens. Couple this with the fisheye and I could cover 95% of the subject material for a trip around Europe.

its all about location and you will shoot there,
Before leaving anywhere I study the city, area, place, location as much as I can to figure out what I will do there. A lot has to do with shooting preferences and many other personal points....

Personally my bare kit is D700 + 24/1.4 + 85/1.4
Most robust kit D700 + 17/3.5 + 24-70/2.8 + 300/4

Tripod / Flash / triggers and other accessories are given

My current "minimum" kit:

XE-1
14mm f2.8
18-55mm f2.8-4 OIS

I will probably break down and get the 55-200mm for complete coverage...

For the "bare" minimum it would be the XE-1 and 18mm f2.

If only one camera and one lens are allowed, D600/700/800 + 24-70.
If 2 lenses are allowed, D600/700/800 + 24-70 + 70-200.

+1, I usually do tones of research before deciding on gear, but it's hard for me to leave without a D600 kit so everything else are usually build around it.

Tripod is a given even IF I decided to leave my DSLR at home . Flash and triggers are not so much for me, I usually wouldn't bring them for backpacking.

For bare minimum I bring my D300 with 28 f2.8 Ai and 80-200 f2.8 AF-D along with an SB700 flash and some miscellanious stuff.

If I would have to reduce this I would bring a 105 f2.5 Ai-S instead of the 80-200, but not voluntarily.

Recent picture with the 28 f2.8

I must admit Im more of a tele person. The 28 on a crop sensor is more then wide enough for me

I could probably get away with just my D300s and my 35 f1.8, but I almost always bring my 18-200 as a walkaround lens. I love it for travel photography.

The next lens I add is my Tokina 11-16 f/2.8.

After that is the 28-75 f/2.8.

So far haven't found the 85 f/1.8G or 70-200 f/4 tremendously useful during travel, though I love them both. I find my full kit of lenses bearable to travel and walk around with, but I'm usually leaving one or more in the room.

Bare Nikon minimum would be the D700 (or F6) with the 85mm f/1.8.

If I have the capacity to carry another lens, it's the Tamron 24-135mm f/3.5-5.6.
