Best travel combo - bare minimum? Me, Julianna Margulies, two bikinis and I don't care about the camera - all the good pictures would be stored in my head.

Peace,

Todd

P.S. - Nice use of the 50. For my minimalist city/vacation kit I take a 35 and 100.

If you are talking bare minimum, then the answer must be a cell phone.
If you are talking bare minimum BUT with IQ (whatever that means), then it must be camera. For me it is NEX 7, Leica 24 Elmar, Leica 50 Summilux, Gitzo 0541 tripod (no way am I going anywhere without it)

  NEX-7    ---- lens    1/20s    100 ISO    0.0 EV

Nikon D600 w/ Tamron 28-75 in Bermuda a few weeks ago. This combo worked out much better than my usual NEX and manual focus primes.

I bought the 24-120mm as a travel lens but I have a feeling I'll be bringing the 16-35mm too.

1 camera and 1 lens for a vacation? D600 + 24-120; best all around compromise of size, speed, range and IQ. Though in actuality I'd always have a 50/1.8 in the bag as well because it's just so small.

I never travel with only 1 lens (and probably never will). I'm still waiting for a 16-600/2.8 high quality lightweight zoom.
But if I have to take only one it will be the 24-120VRII, the best compromise between versatility and quality.

Next month I'm going to China for 4 weeks and I take the following:
D800E + SB-700
16-35VR for street, architecture and inside
24-120VRII for walk around/allround
70-200VRII + 1.7x TC for close-ups, landscape and wildlife (if there is any), from the car/bus
28/1.8G for city night-shapes and inside
85/1.4G for portraits (this one I could leave at home and use the 70-200 but it's new )
Perhaps I throw the 16FE in the bag if there's room left.

From a trip to Venice.

I've tested several versions for "perfect" travel kit and I found that I can't go minimal. But the last version looks like:

Nikon D5200
CV 20/3.5
Nikon 45/2.8 AI-P
Nikon 85/1.8 G
Sigma 150/2.8 nonOS

I think the OP's words "bare minimum" got lost in traffic.

Bare minimum doesn't work for many (even though there was a philosophical debate on just this credence recently) as they need to take more than the bare minimum

My kit just last week (birding trip) to Borneo was D800e / D600, 300/2.8 + 14&20 TCs + Zeiss 21mm + 16-85 VRII. Worked perfectly. On my previous (not specifically birding) trip it was heftier (D800/D600 Sigma 120-300, x2.0 TC, Zeiss 35, Zeiss 21, Sigma 50/1.4). With a monopod on both trips.

If it was a city only (no chance of birds !) then : D800E / Zeiss 21 / Sigma 50/1.4 / Nikon 85/1.8G / TC20EIII (I am so impressed with the IQ from this TC).

There is no bare minimum for me, I'm a photographer I expect to return with high quality images and that requires me to carry a HQ camera and several lenses. Currently a D600 / 18-35G/24-120VR/70-200 F4VR fit that role.

My interpretations of "travel" and "bare minimum" vary tremendously. For instance, motorized family vacation whether Venice or our local state park mean the D7000, the new Sigma 17-70 C (reminds me of my old 28-105), the 70-300, the 35 1.8G, SB600, and a G10 backup. When I'm climbing a Colorado Fourteener, the D7000 (maybe a new D5200) and the 35 1.8G are both my minimum and my limit. As they say, YMMV.

Different places, different lenses. Usually I prefer to carry primes like the 20, 24 (wide) and the 50 or the 85 plus the 70-200 2.8 and a TC. In some cases I carry a back up body but I prefer to travel with a friend

I like the Fuji X100 (and maybe the newer versions are even better?).

I posted a load of shots from London in 2011, pages 22-23 -http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/1007221/21?keyword=x#9881505

I think I'm converging on the perfect overall FF kit as:
18-35 G ED
50mm f/1.8 G
85mm f/1.8 G

I'm still evaluating the 18-35 and it's looking really good. The 85 can be omitted for weight/volume savings if REALLY needed. I hate not having good equipment on trips. Usually it's a location I might not see again for a long time and nothing is worse than not capturing it in full detail.
