p.1 #1 · For a very casual dslr user, how good are the generic flashes?

I had a Speedlite 430 ex but it tore up. I never use it off the camera and I never use manual settings with it. Would I be fine buying a generic flash? If so, what are good choices?

Most of the third-part flash guns are manual only, so be sure to look at ETTL-compatible ones, which are more expensive, if you don't want to use manual.

I don't know what budget you are aiming at, but one flash that has that feature is the Yongnuo YN-565EX.

My Yongnuo YN465 has both TTL and manual modes. Its manual mode is slightly iffy, as it lacks any digital readout for the output. Just a series of lights that are on or off. But for the $$ I can hardly complain. Besides Yongnuo I would also consider Metz and Nissin.

That isn't much less than what I could get a used Speedlite 430 ex for, I would rather spend the extra

edit:

I just found a Yongnuo 565 on ebay for 59, I will give it a try
