p.2 #2 · Nikkor 18-140mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR announced!

A consumer lens like the Nikkor 18-140mm F3.5-5.6G ED VR follow by a consumer Speedlight like the SB300 will be follow by a Consumer or Advance Enthusiast DX camera like a D7200, since the D3200 and D5200 are already out.
What I think they are doing is clearing their liability with their suppliers that have contracts signed and their in house parts inventories.
It is easy to re-design a 18-200mm lens to a 18-140mm lens by minimizing the cam movement to shorten the zoom range and remove the lower performing range normally at the long end. This will add another lens to their line up and also a good kit lens for whatever model that is to come.
As for a Pro DX model will not happen because there are only 2 Pro DX series and they are the D1 and D2. The D200, D300 and D300s are only classified as Prosumers and never a Pro, even for the D700 and D800. Since time and technology have changed, I really do not see there is even a slim chance that we will ever have another Pro or even Prosumer DX model other than an Advance Enthusiast model like the D7000 or the D7100 replacement with a 24 MP (or higher as a test bed for future FF) sensor and larger buffer that every one are asking for.
For those who really enjoy their D300 and D300s, this is a nice time to pick up another D300s new while they are still available or even pick up a used D300 for as little as $400-$500.

Well, you get to gain 5mm at the long end, plus a layer of Nano coating, and a VR motor with 4 stops for a couple of hundreds $ more, it sure is a bargain.

I'm not going to buy this one but as soon as Nikon releases the 18-400mm I'm all over it.

You guys are BAD! :P

It may be a very good lens and a nice update ... Nikon regularly updates the consumer bodies and the lenses that go with them.

Now if they would just do the same for the DX pro body and some of the more pro-level lenses.

Every bit of length helps. At least that was what I was told.

It might be a decent lens. By the very least, it's an update for the older 18-135mm.

Nikon should update the old 17-55mm f2.8 for DX with a newer 17-55mm f2.8 VR.

No argument from me there ... and some DX WA primes, and how about a nice 55-140 f/2.8 DX or even a 16mm DX PC-E

While I have no use for this lens, Nikon also announced a new flash, a small SB-300. This would be a nice size for travel. Not CLS supported, but I could simply stick one of my radio triggers on it for off camera use.

I don't get this either. Why ? I have the SB-400 and it is virtually the same flash. The GN on the 400 is 21m and 18m on the 300. The 300 rotates 120 degrees and the 400 90 degrees. Coverage, dimensions and price are virtually identical. Why bother ?

BTW I love the SB-400. Just stick it in your pocket or waistcoat and you are good to go. It works great with a strapped on Better Beamer too !

Seems like a refresh of the 18-135mm, w/ VR added. I suppose it will replace the 18-105mm.

More importantly, however, is the fact that it's DX; this will give the "D400 coming anytime soon!" crowd cause for hope. Or maybe not- D400 users wouldn't be likely to buy this anyway.

D300 have some hope, D700 users have no hope.

If Nikon updated their 17-55 with VR, the price point would hit $2000. Yikes, I'd prefer to shoot the 18-55 VR like Ken.

How big is this lens compared to the 18-105?

ĽA maximum diameter of approximately 78 mm, length of approximately 97 mm, and weight of approximately 490 g makes it small and light enough to take anywhere. The 18-105 is Approx. 3.0 x 3.5" (7.62 x 8.89 cm).

Canon wants feedback on the 70D before it release the spec's for the 7D MII. Nikon can't seem to agree on what the D400 specs should be and are waiting to see how far Canon goes with the 7D MII. Since everyone is waiting, I would not expect to see much near term. Except for all those new CoolPix cameras just announced of course!

17-70mm F2.8 VR would be awesome, sometimes I wish I had a little extra reach

No, it does NOT have Nano. If it did, the lens would cost much more. It does have SIC coating, which is not the same as Nano. Nano is much better and gives much cleaner images.

Oops! I screwed up thinking that all new lenses will come with a layer of marketing gimmick call Nano coating.

As one working in this industry I would never believe that a single layer will make a lot of difference because there is so much a layer of Nano coating can do if the lens or element is not well designed and polished.
Remember the coating is there to help to transmit light and prevent inter elements reflection, but the thin Nano layer will not be able to handle all wavelengths.
If you compare my 2 favorite standard zooms, the 28-70mm f2.8D and the 24-70mm f2.8G, you will find that the Nano coating only helps in the center where light enters the lens perpendicular to the elements but not off center. So one only gain about 50-80 LW/PH or about 2% or less improvement. But for off center the 28-70mm f2.8D actually performed better than the 24-70mm f2.8G, this is because it has larger elements and less curvatures that require less light bending or deflection which indirectly reduce Coma and distortion.
As a former researcher/designer now a senior exec and photographer, one would like to have the best overall performance and not just for center. This is the reason why I have my 28-70mm f2.8D a 15 years old lens on my D800 (main camera) and the 24-70mm f2.8G about 2 1/2 years old on my D700 (secondary camera) because I really enjoy the results coming out of the older lens.

The next thing those marketing guys will come up with will be Pico coating just like in ink jet printers.
