Non-HDR for me as well - the larger contrast seems more accurate and just as beautiful. Perhaps it is the shadows of the buildings deeper in the frame that makes it look more realistic to me.

Peace,

Todd

Thanks Evan, it had never even occured to me that the lighter builings may have been distracting but now that you have mentioned it i see what you are saying. I made the changes to the b&w version which i am going to have printed on metal.

Srudy, its a spot i have not yet been back to but which i certainly intend to return to at some point when the conditions are what i am hoping for.

I prefer the HDR version..

Maybe it's just me, but I find the edges a bit distracting with the 'severed' buildings, maybe cropping a bit may help that?

Otherwise, nice shot

pretty cool

i like the color ones much better

i'd go with the first one, only you can brighten up the highlights a bit since they appear to fall far under clipping so it doesn't quite glow and pop maybe as much as it did in real life and comes out a touch flatter, and maybe add a touch more local contrast in the lower part, even a layer blend between #1 and #2 down there might do it really quickly

I tried this but maybe it is best to start fresh and ignore mine hah:

and for direct comparison the two originally posted:

and then a more subtle modification:

and slightly less so:

it's very tricky, you made a great start

I prefer the B and W and non-HDR. To me, HDR shots look too phony.

I favor the non-HDR photo here. It is much sharper.

normally I think HDR looks very fake, unreal but in this case I think it works very well and the B+W is outstanding

The B & W looks like it was shot with a Nikon 800, whereas the other two definitely reflect the D7000.. yet they were all shoot with the D 7000. Amazing how the B&W looks like it has more detail. Perhaps its contrast

Nice job.. thanks for posting

**edit** Skibums version seems to have the detail of the B&W

Strange, I usually never prefer the HDR versions, but with yours I like the HDR more. The clouds are more defined.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

I wish I was able to manipulate the image more like skibum but my knowledge of photoshop its still very limited at this point. I am not to sure how to layer blend, well at least how to do it well. I wish I could take the cloud detail from the HDR and the higher contrast from the non-HDR and combine the two. For me, I think skibum's "subtle modification" works well.
