Quick comparison at 40mm F8. Surprised how good Pancake is. I believe the 24-70 has the edge but it's closer than I imagined.

Yep. It's a sharp and very handy lens. I just took our annual family portrait with the pancake last week on a 6D and it turned out great. I am printing it 40x60 on canvas and can't wait to see it on the wall.

OK ... as a fellow 24-70 II owner, convince me to pickup the 40mm. I like the performance of the lens, but for every application I can anticipate I always seem to feel I will be reaching for some other lens that I own first. Is it just the fun factor or the STM functionality for video?

This is the problem I have with all prime lenses. Sooner or later I'm going to regret the one I have on because it will be wrong for what I want to shoot so I have to change lenses or make do.

This is also why I just can't get my head around these fixed focal length compact cameras. Just SO limiting. This isn't 1955.

With modern zoom lenses that have f2.8 maximum apertures and excellent image quality I find primes much less appealing these days.

I simply love this lens! The rendering is fantastic and it is very sharp wide open. I too wondered would I use it as I prefer flexibility of a zoom however my applications over the last year or so have changed. It is so lightweight and compact, my 5dII now is light and compact, a pleasure to carry around on family events during the day. Being a standard focal length, I find it is usually wide enough and also works for people up close. If I need more zoom, I crop. Wider, I can always stitch however I don't feel limited. I also have been shooting a bunch of film this past 3 years and find that sticking with a single focal length trains me to slow down and think more about composition. I really don't feel limited in about 90% of the situations. Granted, for more important work, or paid work, the 24-70 is my go to lens, but for pleasure, I am opting more and more for the 40. Last wedding I shot, I was getting tired during the reception lugging around the 24-70. I swapped on the 40 and was very surprised. It focused very well in the low light situation, never missing focus. I found for the reception, 40 was a great focal length (in doors, large room, actually an old open air with roof gymnasium). I shot the rest of the night with it and a 50 on a crop body. Anyways, I am rambling. As cheap as it is, the 40 is a no brainer (for me).

I think the beauty of the 40mm is when it's not on your camera it takes up very little space in your pack. I use a 85mm f/1.8 80% of the time, but I need something a little wider for closer shots or for small group shots. Even if I'm only using the 40mm a small portion of the time, it doesn't add much when it's just sitting unused in my pack. A 28mm or 35mm would take up around twice the space.

I love the 40mm on my M. Nice and compact even with the converter and it's a nice focal length on the smaller sensor too while focusing nice and close.

My CPS lens strap seems to big when I have my 40mm pancake on my 5D2. Just love the light weight this way.

Also hope they make more pancakes around this size. Would love to see a 24mm or 28mm even if its somewhere around f/4.

When I'm out shooting with my 500/4L IS, I keep the 40/2.8 in my small shoulder bag, in the same small OpTech lens pouch as my 1.4xIII. Right next to the other pouch that holds my 2xIII. Just in case.

This the lens that sits on my 5D2 by default. The main reasons are (1) its small size and weight (2) the usefulness of that focal length (slightly wider than standard, but not too wide) (3) the great image quality it produces.
There are a lot of other advantages with such a lens. I find it easier to get shots with low shutter speeds despite the lack of IS (the lens weights nothing and is very short, so it is very easy to keep the body stable). Also, it is much less noticeable than a large zoom...

It would not replace my 24-105 on a day where I need its whole range, but even then, it does easily find a place in the bag, so it is basically almost always with me now.
