Does anyone have this? I am *this* close to hitting the buy button but holy Moses, that's a big chunk of change. I do already have the 70-200L II...how does this compare other than being quite a bit heavier both in weight and on the pocketbook?

That is a Lisa Holloway lens, more than any lens I can think of. I mean that in a purely complimentary sense.

John-

You are not helping John...
I think she was hoping someone would say it's not worth it and talk her out of it.

I've seen her work with the 70-200. (outstanding).
arm her with the 200/2 and I wouldn't be surprised if she sells the zoom and never looks back.

Lisa, I think you should try this monster. seems like it's right up your alley.

Had a look through your website; excellent photos! Here's one I took at 200 f/2 that's somewhat in your style of work. It is a fine piece of glass; first use was eye-opening with regards to its capabilities.

BUY, don't think. Your work focuses on portraits, a prime will definitely excel for your use. It blows the 135 and 85/1.2 away.

I've rented it THREE times, each time hoping I'd convince myself I didn't want it. Didn't work. Eventually consoled myself with a good 200 1.8L...

I agree the above views; having perused your website and admired your posted work here, the 200 f/2 will be perfect for you...

Consider renting it for a week; a couple hundred dollars is a comparatively small price to pay for the certainty of experience.

Have fun with it.

Here's a used 200 f/2 IS by KEH.

Based on my past experience with both enterprises, I trust KEH Camera (and Adorama's used gear folks too, but not the Adorwin sellers) much more than B&H Used Department.

It's a great lens. Bought mine used, which helped a lot...

For portraits, it's great like the 85/1.2 is great. They both produce absolutely stellar images. I'm not sure which I prefer, they have their own personalities, but both are awesome.

If I had to choose just one I think I'd probably stay with the 85 - the shorter working distance makes it much easier to connect with clients when shooting, it's far more versatile (due to the length), and it's just a cheaper lens!

But man, I'd miss the 200/2.

Honestly... if the 70-200/2.8 MK2 would have been here first I don't think I would have the 200/2. Now that it's here it will stay! A major difference zoom MK1 vs. prime but not so Mk2 vs zoom. Still it's a killer but expensive. You may not think the difference is that big though to validate the price.

I rented the 200 f/2 IS for the 4th of July week this year, and I loved it. I already own the 70-200 IS II as well...and it doesn't seem in the same class. The zoom exceeds or nearly meets all the primes in its range in sharpness...except this one. Sharper at f/2 than the zoom is at f/2.8. At f/2.8 and up, it seems to out-resolve my 5D3's 22 MP (if you ever bother to stop down - it does make great landscapes). Even the IS is better by my unscientific tests (I shot down to 1/15 no problem, some at 1/10 usable).

I used it for tons of portraits, and f/2.0 is a completely different world from f/2.8. A different class of blur. If you love abstracting distant backgrounds into a clean gradient, this is the way to do it. I also brought it with me on a hike, and it provided nice separation from busy foliage when my friends were walking by.

I checked your flickr page briefly - I think you'd love it. I think I'd hate you for taking that B&H deal before I have the money for it, though.

Take comfort in the fact it's a pound lighter than the Nikon versions (Chubby)

Thanks everyone - lots to think about. Why do I feel guilty contemplating such a big purchase? lol

Fred, I used a combination of lenses there...50L, 85L, and 70-200L II. I am a bit of a self admitted lens hoarder.
