p.1 #1 · PanaLeica 42.5mm f/1.2 Nocticron

Haven't seen this mentioned here. In addition to the GX7 announcement, Panasonic also announced (officially) the 42.5mm f/1.2. It's officially a Leica branded lens, and Leica has apparently moved the "Noctilux" name to mean f/1 and faster and reapportioned f/1.2 to be a new moniker of "Nocticron." Not sure how I feel about that name, but it makes sense within the f/2 and faster naming convention, so I'm sure I'll eventually get used to it. (Summicron - f/2, Summilux, f/1.4, Nocticron, f/1.2, Noctilux f/1 and lower).

The lens looks like the construction is closer to Leica build than typical Panasonic build...has the Leica look and appears to be all metal with an aperture ring (interesting). I'd imagine this'll be a pretty darn good lens considering how good the other PL lenses for m4/3 are.

Wow, looks beautiful!

Would love to see samples from it. Do we know how much it will cost?

Super-fast, image stabilized, AF, Leica-branded lens!

Crazy times.

Bet it's going to be expensive and quite nice.

Looks like much less of a dust magnet than the PL25.

I kind of wish they didn't put OIS on there (less stuff to break and possibly fewer elements) but is this the first F1.2 lens with optical stabilization?

I think they just put it on there for the Panasonic bodies that don't have IBIS. As far as I know, this is the only f1.2 lens that has lens based optical stabilization. The other modern f1.2 lenses such as the Nikon 1 32mm f1.2, Canon 85mm f1.2L, and the not yet released Fuji 56mm f1.2 definitely do not have optical stabilization.

Lens OIS always worries me a little because of the greater potential for misalignment especially with some shock throughout the life of the lens. There's also the potential that if additional elements were used to make OIS work, it may just add unnecessary glass into the light path.

I still want one. I sold my Oly 45mm because I just didn't find it that great although amazing for the size.

I'd like to be wrong, but I think the price is going to be pretty darn high on this one, $1699 maybe.

Nocticron? Sounds like a villain from a Tolkien book.

Silly name aside, if it's as good as the 25 and 45, the M4/3s shooters have another reason to be very happy with their system lenses.

Yeah, Panny isn't shy about charging a lot for their best lenses. That's one small part of the reason I left m4/3, actually. I'm sure this will be an impressive optic, though.

Some of Panasonic's lens are quite expensive, but price of some Olympus lens are quite reasonable considered the optical quality, so overall M4/3 isn't bad (speaking as one who've joined NEX party from M4/3).

The aperture ring... I think it's just a control dial, one more stuff to break. If someone has 10 lens, 9 without aperture ring and only this one has, the added control doesn't sound like too useful.

What a resolutely queer name for a lens. They are determined to get those established types in there somehow, I suppose.

Next, they will have a rounded lens with an oculus and call it "Unicron".
(aside: I remember seeing Transformers: The Movie in August of '86 and left the theatre in disbelief...)

All kidding aside, I've never used the Leicasonic lenses. To anybody who has used both the Luso-germanic lenses versus the Japanese ones, what's your opinion?

OIS completely unneeded, just adds bulk, weight, cost, failure points.
