I'm tempted on buying a 21 ZE for my 5DII however my main concern is the 82mm filter thread on the ZE.
My ND and CPL filters including the Z-Pro holder are all 77mm, will they vignette on the ZE if I use a 82-77 step-down ring?

Yes they will. I tried this before making the splurge and buying an 82mm filter.

thanks Gary, I guess I'll have to invest on 82mm CPL, ND and Z-Pro holders too then if I decide on going with a 21 ZE

Step down rings work well! I used them with my ZE 21.

You know of course that when the angle of light through a medium RI, increases - such as the outer perimeter of the image circle produced from light entering from high angles (from axial center) - the attributes photogs seem to hate most also increase and become more apparent in the photograph right? So a filter on a 21mm lens for example will flare, fog, scatter, and so on much more than the same filter on say, a 100mm lens. Personally I'd avoid it just on natural assumption. I probably should have tested this on my ZE 21 specifically while I had it but it didn't seem worthy of testing at the time - as it would be like proving something I thought already obvious.

Alternatively, look at the Lee filter system. Their 4x6" filter holders (also sometimes called 100mm) work fine and cause no vignetting, or minimal at least if shooting close up and wide open. Adapter rings for the 21mm and then whatever other lens thread sizes that you have is cheaper and can be more convenient than buying an array of filters.

'the attributes photogs seem to hate most also increase'

Photographers don't view images like normal people do, so their advice, unlike say bridge engineers, can often be ignored ;-) Seen all the intentional 'creative ghosting' in movies of late? It's art, man.

Using 82mm ND400 on mine.
With a set of step down rings I can pretty much use 82mm on any lens..
