Here is my current kit:

Nikon D200-
- 10.5 f2.8
- 18-70 kit lens
- 35 f1.8g
- 50 f1.8d
- 55-200 f4.5-5.6
- 80-200 2.8 (currently broken)

Lately ive been toying with the idea of updating my camera and going full frame. For what i do (mostly photojournalism + sports. the d200 covers everything except some high iso shooting, so i have decided to upgrade some of my glass. The 18-70 is by far my most used lens, followed by the 35 then 80-200. I would like to finally have a pro zoom.

The lenses i was thinking about:
Nikon 17-55 2.8 - My main choice, slightly expensive but amazing quality
Sigma 18-35 1.8 - Could possibly replace 2 lenses at the same time, can be had new for what the nikon goes for used. Should wait to see reviews..
Nikon 17-35 2.8 Good choice if e do eventually go FX.
Sigma 17-50 2.8 Cheapest of the bunch, has IS but quality could be an issue.

What would you choose and why?

I would chose the Nikon 17-35 f2.8.
As things are now I would even chose the 17-35 over the 14-24 if I had to choose again.

I noticed that the 14-24 is impressive but I do miss the possibility to zoom to 35mm. I wouldnŽt miss being able to zoom beyond 35mm up to 70 or 80mm. I owned a 28-70 f2.8 and noticed that IŽm either on the 28-35mm end and would like wider, or IŽm at the 70mm end and would swap for my 80-200 anyways.

Personally I could live with a 50mm prime to fill a gap between 35 and 80mm.

With what you own now I would sell the 55-200, the 35 f1.8 and the 18-70, buy a 17-35 and get the 80-200 fixed. When you go out, take the 17-35, the 80-200 and the 50mm. The 10.5mm is small enough to stuff it in a coat pocket if you think youŽll play around with it.

The D200 is a great camera. The step up to the D300 is a big one in several regards but coming from a D200 I could see an upgrade to a D600 work. From a D300 to a D600 is a downgrade in my opinion, but purely based on how I use my camera. A used D700 would be a different story though.

We're just shooting the breeze, right? Here's my thoughts:
1. based on the choices you give, I'm assuming that you're staying with DX (or at least, your D200) for now.
2. The 17-55 would be your "pro zoom", and it could potentially replace your 18-70, 35, and 50 (not saying you should toss them, but this lens would be the new king of your D200). I myself like Sigma lenses, so the 17-50 would tempt me here, depending on your budget...
3. ... because it would give you more funds, for instance, if you also wanted to add a 70-200 f/4 or one of the f/2.8's for "sports", which is a little vague. Some sports would be fine with an 85mm, some require 300mm or more.

How much do you use your 35mm, 50mm, or 35-70mm on your 18-70? I'd use this to decide between the 17-55/17-50 vs the 18-35.

Just my thoughts.

I thinking of going with the nikon 17-55. I feel that it will have a better resale value when and if i do decide to go full frame. I would then be able to unload the 35 and 50 1.8 and 55-200 and hopefully be able to fix the 80-200... it fell and now you cant zoom/focus.

IMHO the best move is for Sigma 18-35/1.8. It is the fastest option and the only one who will give you a better life in low light. First references about this lens are incredible good (see DXO fo instance) and based on my experience with Sigma 35/1.4 I believe every word. Sigma seems to be lately a game changer.

If all you are missing is high ISO capability then why not just jump to a used D7000?

You have quite a lot invested in DX and I wouldn't expect the D200 to fetch too much.

That being said, a used D700 is going to be night and day. You might consider the 50mm 1.8d and 80-200 and sell everything else to fund the body.

I definetly want to keep the layout/buttons/build quality like the d200.. I've used a 7000 and didn't really like the feel of it. A 700 seems like the perfect fit for me. I would just keep the 200 since I don't feel that it is worth selling.

I would vote for a D7000 and 17-55mm. That combo is nice. You will increase your ISO by a good bit.

Also might want to trade the 1.8D for the 1.8G. The G is just marvelous. I sold my 1.4 after using the 1.8

I've been using the D7100 since it came out. I'm a former d300 user, and love the D7100. AF is very responsive, even in low light. It shoots pretty clean at ISO 2000. It's smaller and a bit lighter than the D300. My main lens is the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8, a highly reliable lens with pro build. If you think you need the f1.8 (for reduced DOF,) the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 is the obvious choice, plus a Sigma 50mm f1.4. The performance of the D7100 is night and day ahead of the D300. Layout is a bit different, but I got used to it after just one day of shooting. I would sell everything else and get your 80-200mm fixed. Simplify......

Here's my picks:

1. Nikon 17-55

2. Sigma 17-55

3. Nikon 17-35

4. Sigma 18-35

I prefer 55mm. 35 limiting, normal, 55 a short tele. But the 17-35 can be used on ff, which, incidentally, didn't work out for me, at least not yet. 4 could become #1 if 1.8 sounded appealing you and you shoot wide open in low light.

If you're still debating, my choice out of the options you listed would be the Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 DX, hands down. It really is an excellent lens.
