Is it possible to use a sensor cleaning kit designed for cropped sensor cameras (i.e. D90) on a full-frame Nikon like the D600? What about vice versa?

Yes and no

Yes, the DX sensor is smaller so a DX sensor cleaning kit can be used on FX but it requires two swipes instead of one ...

The other way around would be difficult.

I'm still using the swabs I bought for my DX gear on my D600 with no problems

I have a D7100 and a D800e.
Sensor sizes are 23.5x15.6 mm and 35.9x24 mm respectively.

I have a "sensor Wand" that you wrap the Pec-Pads or Quick Strips around for each camera. One is a 14mm wand, the other is a 24mm wand.

Doing a quick test of size by opening the D7100 mirror for sensor cleaning, it appears that you can use the 24mm wand on the smaller sensor 23.5 mm orientation. Because the actual area to be cleaned is wider than 23.5 mm. And obviously, you can use the smaller wand on the D800e (but two swipes required).

So it looks like you can go either way with the cleaners.
Probably just depends on the individual DX camera body.

The problem with running across the sensor more than once is that you might redeposit items that you just picked up from your 1st swipe or worse yet, if you picked up something abrasive from 1st swipe, it could scratch the glass.

The same can be said about one wipe as well.

Yeah,IMO, all this one wipe stuff is to sell more expensive swabs. Of course common sense is required, but the filters in front of the sensors aren't THAT sensitive.

That easy too, just swipe upsidedown instead of leftright
