I don't know if anyone else here remembers the first few years of the 17-55 f/2.8 IS EF-S (other than old farts like me), but it was kind of similar. Lots of IS failures. Then suddenly it stopped being an issue. I bet the same thing happens here. The good news, from what I'm hearing, is Canon is replacing them under warranty with no BS about impact damage and such.

Same problem here. Happened twice. Both times when the lens was in near-vertical position. The second time the focus limiter was set to full range. I think it may have been the first time too.

I've had this problem with my 70-200mm IS II lens as well. I sent it into canon, and they sent it back saying that there was no problem. It's sporadic, doesn't seem to affect the IQ or IS functionality, but it is a bit distressing. I'll probably send it back in again.

The times I have sent mine in I just simply put IS grinding noise. Please check. They have replaced it quickly both times.

Mine tended to happen if pointed up/down as well or more commonly with an extender. It got to the point I thought maybe my extender was doing it but got the 1.4x III and same thing. Terrible noise... Loud vibrationy grunt noise to start/stop IS.

It sounds like you should just send it to Nikon at this point. I've hardly used my f/2.8 IS II since the first couple of weeks which was over a year ago. I suppose it will probably conk out if I use it the next time in 2015.

Peter: Three weeks ago I sent in 70-200 (IS-II) & 300/4 to CPS along with a clean and check coupon along with the 7D, as I found AF getting sluggish on the 7D. CPS sent the 300 back first and when it came it was making weird rattling/grating noise on all bodies except the 20D. On the 20D it occurred only if I tilted 45+ degree with the lens facing the sky. When I asked CPS they sent a label to send all in again. This 300/4 was returned with new IS and Lens assembly (no idea what it means), 70-200 was corrected for inaccurate IS alignment and 7D for electrical adjustments.

I am now mechanical noise free...free of charge

One of my four makes a distinct buzzing noise different fom the others.

I sent it to canon two years ago and they said nothing was wrong w it. It still see s to be working fine.

The thing is with this noise, it will make the noise but if I shut the camera body off and back on again, it does not make it anymore. It is like it "resets" the lens or whatever. It always goes back to working just fine afterward.

Makes me wonder what may be going on with it to cause it to freak out... It may not be damaged or broken, just defective until reset. I wonder if something can be done via lens firmware or something to prevent the noise from happening. Not sure.

Mine intermittently makes a strange screeching sound when the IS starts it's initial spin up but once the VF becomes stable, it's silent. It hasn't affected any functioning or image quality so I haven't bothered to get it checked out.

Mike, that kind of IS noise is as normal as the noise that comes out of your car starter when you keep it on after the engine has started.

However, I suspect that Canon Canada CPS folks would tell me the lens performs in accordance to Canon specifications. If I ask them what is that those specs say about IS noise, they would give me their stock answer: those specs are proprietary to Canon, and they are not available to outsiders.

I feel that Canon Canada CPS & Technical support systematically hire dilettantes in order to obfuscate and frustrate any technical inquiry into their product performance by their customers.

Canon have Mercedes level pricing of their EOS products, but in Canada their product service/support is of the Lada type .

Which it absolutely should be considering its intended use.

I have a love/hate relationship with the damn thing.
