Well, this was not an easy task (for me) took plenty of poor shots. At least, by reviewing them I learned a bunch of what NOT to do. Still, even these are marginal. Would like to have some C & C on the few below.
Thanks for looking!

Move around as much as you can and look for opportunity… backgrounds (hard to do at some tracks… fences and walls and such), paddock shots… people… have fun…

Shots are technically very good… I would try and get some multiple car shots…

Dynamics, into and out of turns where you can see “loading”… overtaking and passing…

Shoot the eyes and helmet, you want to see the eyes if possible… the eyes are also a good spot to get your exposure and focus…

I use the center focal point, it’s a 5D and the only point that is consistent… but on newer bodies… frame with your choice of point… I would still use a single focal point, but that’s just me… your choice…

IMHO ,

Jefferson,

Appreciate the feedback, and thanks! Had disappointing results with multiple cars. Tried various DOF options but never got something that looked good enough. Example here, in this case between the lack of DOF even at f/11 (even with well over 100 feet away) and the heat coming off the track, the second car is just not acceptable.

A multi car shot with one or more OoF cars… or bikes… will happen most every time if the cars are close enough to frame in the shot, because they are usually going in different directions… rotating on their own individual axis’… through an arc…

If you are shooting a shutter speed that is slow enough to show motion… and your focal point is on the helmet of your target car… the other car is moving through your frame. It will blur just like the grass… also a reason to use a single focal point when shooting AI Servo…

To get more than one car in focus… at race speeds… the cars should be as nearly on the same plane as possible… or catch them passing when both are near the same speed…

In all these shots all of the cars are going in the same direction... same speed... in the same plane...

Geometry...
