p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Card reader for D800-formatted SD cards?

I have a D800 and I usually use my camera as the card reader, i.e., I attach the camera to the PC via a USB cable to access the files in the card (a SanDisk Ultra 16G SD HC)

But recently I wanted to keep shooting with another card while uploading the shots on the first card to my Windows7 PC via a card reader. It's just a generic SD card reader I got at Radio Shack but it works perfectly fine on other cards.

And with the card from the D800 my PC didn't recognize that anything was there! It was like card reader wasn't even plugged-in. It did make the bonk-BINK sound when I plugged it in and the bink-BONK sound when I unplugged it, but so sign that the PC thought there was an actual storage device there. I had no trouble reading it with the camera.

Is there a trick to reading SD cards that were formatted/written on the D800 using an external card reader?

Thanks in advance.

No trick at all that I know of. My D800 SD Cards read just fine in several different laptops and SD/USB card readers.

Make sure the card reader supports SDHC. Even though SDHC's nothing new, stuff you find in stores can be literally years old. The Best Buys by me have Class 10 cards as the fastest in stock, and they wanna charge 45MB/s online prices....

Hi -
I use the same reader as EB-1 - Works fine, and, I think well worth the extra cost
You get what you pay for -

Will Photoshop or other image editing program read the card?

Try removing the card reader and reinserting. Then insert the card. Also, try the built-in reader if you have one.

After you get the photos from the card, use a disk wiping program to write all zeros or ones to the card, then format in camera.

It was the reader. I went down to my local Staples and got a Vivitar 50-in-1 reader/writer and it works fine. (they didn't have the Lexar). Thanks to everyone for their help.
