Next to the dry creek bed that leads to Lake Powell- near the dam.

Hi Charlie,

What a strange site this is. How did that great big turd wind up on top of that phallic looking thing?

I love your scientific terminology, Morris .
That big thing on top is part of the hard rock layer that was just above the softer white layer, and it protects the softer layer from eroding quickly. It's called a "capstone," or "big turd." .

I agree, Sasha.
These hoodoos are sufficiently inaccessible that some knowledge and effort are required to even get there- so not many people see them.
But once you get there, it's a real wow of a place.
All hoodoos are interesting, and these are among the most spectacular I've ever seen.

Charlie: Nice job isolating the light on the big hoodoo. You had very nice light and clouds. Did you start your trek before dawn?

Very nice shot Charlie! This is the first time I have seen this area. You have captured it very nicely.

Thanks Bart, Tim, 3iron, Steve, Tira, Jim and Ray.
This was taken about a dozen years ago. Some of us had old 4X4s (mine was an Isuzu Trooper II) and we'd go exploring the surrounding desert dirt roads. There were gates to keep cattle from destroying the wrong government land- and we always closed the gates behind us.
We drove to the dry river bed, followed the track down the bed to within 1/4 mile of the hoodoos, and walked the rest of the way. We came in from the northwest.
Be not dismayed: in all our explorations, we NEVER made our own tracks. We drove existing dirt roads and tracks, and then hiked from there. We also walked carefully so as to not disturb the microbiotic crust any more than necessary.
These hoodoos were among the best places we explored.
