p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Hi : ) !!! - Mamiya lens users - A few questions !!!

Hi,

I remember looking at the pictures of many working photographers
some fifteen to twenty years ago! Many used Mamiya cameras as
their creative medium. I remember looking at the pictures of photo-
grapher Herb Ritts among others. Now, with adapters, one can
attach Mamiya lenses to one's camera. If you had Mamiya lenses,
or if you bought them for your digital camera, could you please
share your experience with them on a dSLR body and perhaps
link me to your photos. I'll be happy to hear any information you
may want to share in relation to the work you do with them, their
sharpness, the adapter you are using, focal lengths, and disadvan-
tages of working with those lenses on a digital dSLR.

In advance, thank you very much : ) !!!

Kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

Hi Iggy,

Here's some links.

The first group is best - mostly images. The second group is a mix of images and tech for particular lenses (mostly). The last link is the most recent 'compendium' thread on the Mirex Tilt-Shift adapter, which many people use to great effect with various medium format lenses, including and especially Mamiya 645 lenses.

Mostly photos

Hi Jim,

Thank you for your message : ) !!!

I have started looking at the links you have provided!
I like the pictures I see. So far, (I am not through yet),
I find very interesting the close up and macro work
done with these lenses. I would like to see more of
the work done with wide angle lenses like the 35 mm.
and 45 mm. With the 45 mm. I have seen some
images that are not too sharp. The color rendition
given by these lenses is quite interesting on digital. It
seems to me a bit different to the rendition that I saw
on film some years ago.

I'll keep on looking and let you know how I am doing.

Thank you again, kind regards,

igmolinav : ) !!!

I have no idea what Herb Ritts used but I think it was RZ's that you are referring to. Annie Leibovitz certainly used RZ's for many years. I'm sure heaps of pro's did as the RZ was certainly a pro camera, designed to get the job done, and for a very long time too. They're built like a brick shit house, to use an Australianism. I still have an RZ II and a few lenses. However, none of this can be readily adapted to normal digital cameras, partly because the RZ did not have a helicoid in the lenses but used a bellows on the camera to focus. I don't think I would ever go to the effort to build something to adapt a lens to a Canon, even though I have the lenses.

Mamiya M645 are another story, as per Jims reply. Everything about adapting/using them is easy.
