It can't be turned on.

What happened to Nikon QA system. Since I bought the 36MP camera, it had two trips to Nikon Service Center.

1. Left focus issue.
2.Oil dot on sensor issue

Now, it's going to have the third one to Nikon.

Nikon's quality drives me crazy.

Even though I have drooled over this body's resulting images. I'm petrified to get stuck with one of these 'impact damage' lemons.. 3 times at service !

Life's made up of compromises.

There's always Canon, Sony, Pentax and others.

I'm really sorry to hear about your troubles though. I've also had to send mine in for a check up on left AF.

I guess I'm lucky, no problems in 14 months of ownership. Sorry to hear about your misfortunes.

Nikon has very consistent QA... unfortunately.

You returned a camera to Nikon for an oil dot on the sensor?

Might sound silly if it were an isolated event, but with lots of them out there, it's the best way to get Nikon to take steps to prevent it from happening in the future. As the ol' boss used to say, "be kind to your future self".

A camera not turning on obviously a big deal. It's nothing more than an expensive paperweight like that.

An "oil dot" is not a big deal, and hardly worth returning a camera over. If it's just one spot, it's barely worth a cleaning.

Really sorry to hear of your issues with this great camera. Hope it gets sorted for you pronto.

re. Overall rate of camera failures/issues. From all I've read on this it's pretty consistent across the board whether you are using Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony, Olympus .. whatever. Around 5-7% of all new cameras have issues (not impact related ), on forums like this we tend to hear of it more often because most everybody posts their issues, or imagines they have an issue when it could be another component failure (SD / CF card or battery).

Personally (having had issues with 3 out of my last 6 cameras) I've come to accept that the very complex, somewhat delicate, computers that we carry around with us, are going to need maintenance/servicing, much like a car, rather more than like your average home computer.

This comment isn't targeting the OP.
