what is the best way to clean the nikon 300 f4? i have had mine for a few months and have the tc 14ii permanently attached to it.
although i have not even taken it off the camera since i bought it i was wondering if dust gets in, do i need to send it off for service or can i clean it myself?
i am competent when it comes to cleaning my own sensors but not too sure about the 300 f4.

Nothing to do if dust gets in it and it won't show up in an image anyway. Exterior I use the purple 409, toothbrush and cloths after a hard day at the race track and for the glass whatever you use. Isopropanol for the contacts. I use the same stuff on the camera body. This has been my cleaning for a few decades.

Unless the dust is excessive it is not worth having internal elements cleaned. That is unlikely after only a few months.

I think it was an Impala.

File this under "Things to never meddle with."
Do not start poking around inside the lens from the back!

It's a spray on cleaner that I'd NEVER use on camera equipment
Ya wanna make the rubber/barrel look new and protect it from UV's, try 303

303 aerospace rocks. My first bottle lasted me almost a decade, I just Amazon'd up a 2nd bottle. I think they pay for themselves just in longer life wiper blades alone!

Never had any trouble with 409 at all, in years. But use what you're comfortable with.

i was looking for a method to clean any dust that may enter the rear section of the lens over time.
if a few specks did get in there, would they show up on my pics?

She's real fine my 409!
Giddyup! Giddyup! Giddyup 409

Now that it is running non-stop through my brain, I figure others may as well enjoy it too.

Lens and camera? Just an old soft rag. Nothing special. Maybe some breath and a microfiber cloth on the glass.

Yeah, but that's not what he's asking...
It's the lack of rear element, so you look right in to the aperture blades. You could stick a long cue tip in there and touch them.
I bet you could really mess it up. Maybe very soft compressed air.. I would not be the one to try it however.

No.

You are obsessing over a problem which does not exist.

If you want to see how insignificant a few tiny scattered dust particles in your 300mm lens are really going to be, see this demo of a rather large "dust speck" on the rear element (the worst possible location) of an 18~70mm zoom, and its impact (none) on the resulting photos shot at f/8.

As I said above, you're fretting over a problem that isn't going to happen.
