p.1 #1 · Botanical Gardens Wedding - (70 photos)

Chuck's thread inspired me to get some unfiltered feedback from everyone here. I don't post here very often but i'm hoping to change that since I do a lot of reading and have really benefited from the wealth of knowledge here.

Please don't hold back, I've got thick skin so i'd love to hear what you don't like AND what you do like. Thanks in advance!

You will get x5 more clicks and comments if you change the number to 20-30 images. Even if you explained in your post why your posted 70, ain't nobody got time for this.

My quick glance says you need to dial down the noise reduction, or change your sharpening for web process, or both. The skin gets pretty mushy in some shots, and combined with your sharpening technique (looks 'sharpen for edges' esque) the files feel crispy digital.

#13 if you'd focused on the mirror with him in the foreground, it's x100 more interesting

16/17/18 is a strange transition to the ceremony. It looks like a first look, but without the bride.

Post 19 OR 22, 28 OR 29, 30 OR 31 etc. will cut your numbers and strengthen presentation. Clients will be less bored and it makes everything look better overall.

Clean, crisp, great images overall.

Thanks Jeremy! I'm pretty indecisive and since my wife and I have different opinions on our favorites we end up posting more than either of us would individually. I agree we probably ended up with too many on this one and I should have narrowed it before posting here. I'll definitely look into the sharpening, thanks for pointing that out.

I agree on the number. Pick a number that you want to blog and FORCE yourself to stick to it. The world won't end if you cut an image. If you can't decide, walk away for 30 minutes and then look again. Everyone except the B&G gets bored after a while.

Your work reminds me of Rich Lavigne's. It's consistent and clean and there's not a lot of bad in there because you're so consistent. At the same time, I would LOVE to see some inconsistency. Not in quality, but in style. All the exposures are basically the same and the compositions are all around the same distance. Go for something new. No one will die. I promise.

A few that stood out to me for critique:

Turn her a bit more so the nose falls within the cheek line. Wa-la, smaller nose

This is the difference between broad light and short light. Choose short light!

Ear Hair!!!

If you have to shoot direct flash, I'd zoom the flash or drag the shutter. It'll look a little more stylized that way:

Tony,

These critiques you're imparting are really great.

Two years from now, what I want even more than a higher income from a better skillset is to have the attitude you demonstrate by helping people who don't have your talent but who want to move in that direction.

First, tighten up your set. I think you have MANY quality shots here, but how many are actually at the core of your brand? I dont think anyone would argue that what you have here is well done, but I do think you'd have a hard time getting a stranger to identify your brand in a succinct fashion. I have seen the benefits of shortening my blog sets when prospective brides tell me in their words what I consider to be my core identity as a photographer. This is the first step to developing a happy client relationship.

For example, shots 1, 5, 6, 8 are super classy, clean refined shots with great light. Showing just those 4 for getting ready would give a completely different feel to the set and make 'you' more identifiable in the market. Once you hone in on that, drive at developing this identity.

I dont really have any crits on the photography as it's all generally well done, clean, and consistent.

Agree with everyone
you are wonderfully consistent with these. the dance shots are wonderfully lit as are their portraits. little nip picky things like ear hair should be handled etc.
awesome venue and awesome couple... you should take the opportunity during a wedding like this to break from your consistent style ... I agree that a slight change in consistency would help and also make things more fun for you as a shooter.

Really nice set of images. Perhaps should have turned her a little more to the camera in the first image.

Starts off a bit so so for the bridal preparation (a bit oversharpened, bad lighting etc), but gets really good towards the middle bits!!! The garden ones are spectacular!
