Tutorial: Inside Digital Photo Professional (DPP)

Canon’s Digital Photo Professional (DPP) is a free, and surprisingly powerful, image organizing and editing application that ships in the box with every EOS camera. You’ll find DPP on the EOS Digital Solution Disk alongside other very useful Canon developed software, such as EOS Utility.

CPN writer George Cairns takes a closer look at the capabilities of the DPP software up to version 3.13.0.

Very good read indeed. I, too, may have to check DPP again.

Thanks for the link Fred. Since I want to stay with Mac OS 10.6.8 I cannot update my version of Aperture beyond version 3.2.4 (thanks a lot Apple). DPP will be a valuable option for me.

Nice to bring light to how good this FREE software is Fred. I find it impressive and quick to edit with.

Some good reading info here, thanks again!

+1. Best RAW manipulator for EOS that I've encountered.

Aperture was my main motivation to upgrade to 10.8.4. I loss a few apps I didn't use much, found a patched version of Quicken 2007 (!), CS5.1 still worked fine and Aperture is super stable. I use DPP for the occasional troublesome RAW that Aperture or ACR can't get right. Wish DPP was available as a plug-in. I really like the lens correction and optimize features.

Getting DPP as a plug-in for Apple and Adobe apps would be really cool. It's not hard to use DPP on photos that have been imported by Lightroom, and I assume that Aperture imports into a similarly easy to use hierarchy, but being able to compare the results of DPP processing and Lightroom processing side-by-side quickly would be neat.

Fred, thank you...having not tried DPP I will do so, Lightroom has been my go to but with a nice tutorial; how-to, having another tool is always a good thing...like another 'L' lens

I have been a DPP user since I got my Canon EOS 20D in 2006. I'm still pleasantly surprised at just how good a product it is considering that it's free.

We may not get lens shades included with non-L lenses, but we have a great RAW processor!

I started using DPP about a year ago to convert my RAW files. It gives me complete control over the Canon Picture Styles menu too for RAW files. The Curves tool is in there as well. The Picture Style Editor is also in the bundle so that you can create and save your own Picture Styles which you can upload to the camera. Canon has excellent video tutorials for all of the software. And you can also export files directly into Adobe Photoshop to work on further. I absolutely love it

I wish it didn't crap out when there are ~3300 files in a folder.

Yeah, it is a memory/cpu hog and will keep trying to allocate more memory, probably linearly. Works fine when you are working with fewer files at a time and don't give it too many parallel tasks.

It happens on every computer, regardless of the amount of RAM. Perhaps DPP only has 32-bit access or something. Other than that and the "docking bug," DPP is a very nice program for its limited purpose.

You're welcome.
DPP is not for everyone but It's a good free alternative to LR, Aperture or CaptureOne.
