Shed loads of gear has absolutely nothing to do with photography.
Well, it certainly has quite a lot to do with photography, since it's all photography gear. But it has absolutely nothing to do with how good you are as a photographer.
If I had to, I could cut my gear to my OM-D, 9-18, 25/1.4, 60/2.8 and 35-100 and it would fill about 90% of my shooting needs, and I'd work around that other 10%. Or, I could live fine on my Fuji X four lens setup right now for most of my stuff (though if I went all Fuji, I'd probably pick up the 55-200 to fill the long end needs).
The rest is special case stuff or things that just make getting a certain look easier (like shallow DOF, or a little extra speed, or an extra-wide view, or super telephoto stuff, which I don't shoot that often, but I certainly do shoot).
I do have too much gear right now, but I'm going to be selling most of my manual focus glass, keeping only my Rokinon 85/1.4, FD 50-300L, 135/2 and maybe (but probably not) my 200/2.8 of the lenses I actually paid any real money for. I'm also keeping my FD 50/1.4 (got it for under $50 because it was jammed...fixed it myself...not really worth it to sell), Hexanon 57/1.2 (gives a great look and I got the lens for FREE, so I have no money invested in it), FD 70-210 f/4 - got this for free from my Dad's old kit.
