Are the 5D battery grips interchangeable? Can a MKII grip be used on a the 1st 5D?

Its allways something. Guess I'll have to upgrade to the MkII or III. However, I did see some used 5D's in the $650 range. Thank you for the responses.

The LP-E6 batteries used in the 5DII, 5DIII, 6D, and 7D are a lot better than the BP-511A batteries used in the 5D and older xxD cameras (e.g. 20D, 30D, 40D).

They last longer at any temperature. They last a lot longer at cold temperatures. I have both, too.

I've had a few generic batteries of both kinds fail, and a few OEM BP-511A fail (i.e. old age). My new 6D has objected to a few generic LP-E6 and at least one OEM LP-E6 (probably an old one). I estimate that I've gone through and/or have about a dozen BP511-A and I currently have seven OEM LP-E6, which I use for my 6D (was 5DII) and a SmallHD DP6 HD monitor.

P.S. HarodCo, you'd have a lot more replies if you had posted this on the Canon forum.

I agree, the LP-E6 batteries were a major improvement over the 511 series in terms of longevity and dependability across more operating temperatures. I suspect Canon's main motivation for improvement was due to adding live view and video to the 5D series feature set.
