p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Get 18-35mm 1.8 / give up 12-24mm and 28mm?

Hi,
My local store is going to have the 18-35mm f/1.8 by this week.
Do you guys think it would be a good idea to sell my 12-24mm f/4 and 28mm f/1.8 and get this one in their place?

I was thinking that I could use this one to serve the purpose of the other two combined in one lens package.

I would loose the 12-17mm range... but I always keep my 12-24mm in the 18mm mark so I couldn't care less about that.
And I would get a little more versatility and some extra range than my 28mm f/1.8.

Versatility is what it is making me think about it. One less lens to carry around, more light at the 18mm range, more range at 35mm... and if I sell the other two, I would pretty much break even pricewise.

Am I gear dreaming again and just trying to justify new Gear Acquisition?
Or does it make sense at all?

What do you know about the 18-35? Have you taken her out yet, played around with her a bit? Have you seen how she looks in various situations? Is she higher quality than the two you are currently with? Face it, you have not even met her yet, nor touched her. You have not seen her size. You want to know if you would like her better, sight unseen?

Saw some shots over the company whose name must not be mentioned here. Starts with a C....

Very good quality. Also works with APS-H. At the long end of 35mm, it has very little vignetting too!

No, no and no.... but the reviews are looking pretty good :-) ... I also plan to give it a quick run at the store, but wanted to know your thoughts to have some more perspectives. I might get it, and keep the other two until I decide if the 18mm-35mm 1.8 is for me or not, I think that would be a good idea. Tks

Kool, I will go and see if I can find them :-) . Tks.

Download PhotoMe, install and point it at your photo collection. It will tell you the focal lengths you use most often and that will be an indication of whether you can really afford to lose the 12-17 range or not.

Don't know man, 18mm on DX isn't wide enough.

Tks, I did and looks like I have a few at 14-15 range :-O ....

Yeah, I went to the store to tried a display copy they had... and... tbh I wasn't really impressed.

Maybe for someone without the range already on their line up, could be more attractive, but honestly I proffered the IQ and Color and the overall feel of my 28mm 1.8g.

And I saw quiet a difference on coverage from my 12mm to the 18mm.. I thought it was going to be less noticeable.

So, I think I will just wait until some other people gives this new lens a good workout in several situations and decide in a few months, but TBH , I left the store with the feeling that my prime and wide zoom are better options for me. They are really good at what they do.

Tks. guys.

Going from 18mm to 12mm is a *massive* difference. Not even in the same world.

Really, this boils down to whether or not you will need f1.8 or not, doesn't it? I am a night shooter and that's the reason I chose the Tokina 11-16mm f2.8. I am very tempted by the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 for night sky shots. Do you photo at night a lot? If so, you already know if this lens will work for you or not. I agree with Rattymouse above that the difference between 12mm & 18mm is "massive." Not even in the same world.

Thank you guys,
I will leave my line up alone... it is working great as it is right now, I think it was a quick case of GAS .

You guys saved me again. :-)

You could always get the tokina 11-16 f/2.8 along with the 18-35 f/1.8 if you end up selling both of those lenses

DXO just reviewed the 18-35 (for Canon, but still) and the results were outstanding.

12-24/4 DX was always one of my favorite Nikon lenses, so, I'd keep that and figure a way to get the 18-35/1.8 on top of that.

I think you could gain a lot of versatility by dumping your 28 for this lens.

Well, yeah...
After looking all the reviews I asked a friend (Canon owner) that has it already if he would let me try it... and give it a real world try since I had only tried it at the store really quick.....

Well, I liked it so I unloaded my 28mm 1.8g and my 12-24mm already and ordered the 18-35mm 1.8 at my local store.

Now I am just waiting for it.... for some reason they have Canon mounts already in, but Nikons are still showing as ordered but not here yet :-( .

Once I get it, I am going to see if I can manage my wide shots at 18 mm for landscapes, if not I will just add the tokina 11-16mm to the mix. But hopefully I don't need to.
