p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · First Timer Wedding - in the Oregon Mountains

I was extremely honored, though admittedly a bit anxious, when my friends Randy and Tessa asked me months ago if I would be their wedding photographer. My only previous wedding experience was a very impromptu last-minute request from a buddy of mine to get some shots at his wedding, when I happened to be next door taking photos at a motorcycle event. Despite my hesitation, they said they loved my work and had confidence I'd do a good job for them. We worked together a few months back on their engagement photos, and we had a great time: Boise Engagement Photos

I knew if I was going to do this, I wanted to do everything I could to get it right. I bought books and magazines on wedding photography, studied all sorts of online resources, watched videos, bought another lens I thought would be helpful (it was), stressed, made pages of notes, took a six-hour trip (each way) to the venue a month ahead of time to check it out an plan, made arrangements for my (also inexperienced) assistant to help with posing and details, planned, rented a backup camera body, lens and video light, and stressed some more.

One thing I knew about wedding photography - there are no do-overs. I did all I could to make sure we could capture all the important moments in an artistic way, without failure. It was a good opportunity to grow in my photography skills, while hopefully capturing moments at their most special of occasions.

I wound up taking over 1500 photos between the rehearsal Friday evening and the ceremony and reception on Saturday. A few clouds would have been nice, but nope. Bright, harsh sun. It was hard work, but a lot of fun, too. Randy and Tessa are an absolutely wonderful couple, clearly head-over-heels in love with each other!

CC welcome, as I do want to continue to learn and grow. As you experienced pros know, things move very quickly, and I certainly didn't get everything I wanted, nor did I always get the technical aspects right when the moments happened. All part of the learning process, I guess. Here's a sampling:

I wish my first wedding looked this good. How's that? Very competent coverage with some nice moments. I'd say the group photos could use a little work. Either make them more elegant, or find a way to get them to seem a little more natural, but they aren't bad at all. Most of the compositions feel centered where I'd have preferred something a tad more dynamic. Overall, strong though. they will be thrilled, I think. Really good for a first hack.

Thanks very much for the feedback. Great point on the centering vs dynamic issue. I hadn't really noticed that so many of these wound up that way until you mentioned it. I virtually always look to not center the subjects, customarily setting AF points off center just for that reason. I think in many of these we either had space constraints that didn't give that option, or I wound up cropping something out that would have made the image less appealing. I'll definitely watch for that as I continue editing and for future shoots.

I would lose 18, it's just weird. You want him looking at her, esp. that moment! 19 and 20 do not work IMO. Overall, pretty good. I'd like to see better composition, definitive toning and better use of light to add more drama.

I believe you did as good a job as many of the regular posters here. Personally, I am not a fan of the now trendy "attack of the tree-heads."

20 is one of my favorites; I can't imagine what "doesn't work" about it.

I think 18 was one of those "you had to be there" kind of moments, so I can understand why it wouldn't show as well here. He was struggling to get the ring on her finger, so she finally had to take over.

Thanks! Definitely one of my favorites too, and I've gotten a ton of positive response from the bride and groom and their friends about that one.

Thanks very much, Doug. I shoot photos of all sorts, but have mostly specialized in motorsports (examples: http://www.latebraker.com/blog/?p=1029). The last couple of years I've been doing more portraits, landscapes, and always lots of dog photos (as my wife is a Golden Retriever breeder).
