p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Sending my Sony 35mm OSS back

50mm is my favorite FOV. I got the Sony 35mm OSS for my NEX-5N as a potential replacement for my Panasonic 25mm that I use on my OM-D, primarily for the weight savings (5N+35mm = 1lb, OMD+25mm = 1lb 6oz - doesn't seem significant but I carry multiple bodies+lenses for hikes).

I really wanted to like the Sony but its acuity is just lacking, not just wide-open but also stopped down, particularly when compared to the Pany. The OSS worked well, about equal to the IBIS on the OM-D with the Pany. I'm normally not super particular on acuity but I do have minimum thresholds and the Sony fell short.

I'd be interested in hearing others' opinions on this lens.

i agree, i have the same problem and no solution.
The Sony 35mm OSS is a good lens in every aspects.
but it never shines.

does the touit shines?
in my eyes not bright enough.
sharper > yes.
microcontrats (3D) > a little only (have not better seen/made)
bokeh > mostly OK to good
worth ~800 euro? not for me.

biogon ZM 35mm 2.0?
would be also OK for FF Nex?

I honestly don't think you'll find a better autofocus lens in the 50mm FoV for ~$500 than the PL25. It's rendering is just pretty, I almost never get an image I don't like out of it.

My only complaint about it is that I wish it was metal and weather sealed and the OEM hood while very attractive isn't very practical.

I've tried the Sony 35mm F1.8 on Alpha mount which is the model the NEX version was made from and it's a very good lens but like you said, nothing close to the PL25 in terms of actual micro contrast and rendering.

If you don't need stabilization the Canon 35mm FD f/2 is an excellent lens ($200) - and can be f/1.4 if you use the SpeedBooster. It's one of my favorites but alas I need stabilization for much of my shooting.

Somewhere on Dyxum, I believe there was a comparison and a look at the lens diagrams.

The DT has convex elements at the front and rear, and the E has concave, so I don't believe they're all that similar.

Here's one, subject distance about 75 feet, 100% crops from center of the frame:

OM-D w/Pany 25mm vs NEX5N w/Sony 35mm OSS

The Pany looks better at each aperture, but to be honest, the difference is not significant enough that i would care. It is interesting that the Sony chose half the shutter speed of the Oly.

i say just stick an oly 50/1.8 or tak smc 50/1.4 on a speed booster. not much bigger and not really more expensive, though it's possible neither of those lenses is particularly good with the SB.

are those jpg or raw? nex jpeg is considerably less sharp and less contrast at default settings then what comes out of oly. to me it looks like then nex just needs some sharpening added if anything to match the oly, more then this being the difference in lens sharpness.

The 35mm OSS is fine. It's sharp stop down and the center is sharp at wider aperture. What I don't like is fringing and coma.

I do want a better lens but the 35mm is good for what it is.... inexpensive, OSS, small and light... I would keep using it probably until I decided pull the trigger on getting the CV 35mm 1.2 (Only purchased the Hawk's M-mount adapter so far ) or Zeiss 32mm but even so I would still make use of a convenient small lens with AF and OSS at times.
