Which of the mamiya 645 lenses would you recommend for a dslr? I currently have:
200mm f4 N
I am thinking about acquiring a 300mm f5.6? What ya think?
I'm just getting into Mamiya glass for my Nikon d3200 & am already very pleased.
I grabbed a 105-210mm "C" *non-ULD* for $80, & it's acceptably sharp. I posted a lens test of it using my LCD monitor, it resolves well, color rendition looks fine an ad-hoc, hand-held resolution test (link at bottom).
The only caveat about this 105-210 C *non-ULD* is its 2-touch focus/zoom & external focus. This is a non-issue for my uses, 2-touch zoom/focus is fine for that focal length. I've seen good results from other folk using the non-ULD 210 zoom. Altho a one-touch zoom/focus would be better for tracking moving objects, esp. birds, I'm just not ready to chase that price-point yet (c.f. Tamron adapt-all era SP f/2.8 300mm's were fine pro-level lenses of the day, but are rare & get bid up pretty fast on eBay).
As for the 300mm ULD, that *is* the one to get, especially the "N" (recent? new?) version, and is, in fact the very lens I grabbed today off of eBay for ~$200.
I've seen multiple comments from Mamiya shooters (both 35mm format & 645) that the "A" lenses are preferred over the "C", and that flavor is in the shorter focal lengths. Basically shop for the "A", "N", & "ULD" designations.
