Congratulations to Hakka for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 29 votes - View Previous Winners

?format=1000w

D800E, 14-24.

2 layers blended in CS6.

The trails were achieved by turing the zoom and focus rings during a 30 second exposure.

Hey Hakka,

Very creative! It is indeed different and yet cool. It's amazing in that it helps to show that all of the stars are not a zillion miles away, that some must be much closer. When shooting normally, at least for me, the feeling is that all of the stars are just so far away, but with the zooming and having some stars with longer trails it shows that some are indeed closer and end up with the longer tails.

What made you think about doing this at night with stars?

Jim

I dont know, I was just doing a milky way shoot one night and the idea hit me. This was the second attempt at it, the first try was just a smooth zoom which streaked the stars but it didn't have the directional effect that this one has.

Neat idea. Why turn the focus ring? I get the zoom .

That is cool, thought about this before, but never tried it. I too ask why turn the focus? I thought you'd be at infinity. Do you turn them at the same time? Did you find you got vibration or other movement doing this?

Thanks,

Mike

The focus ring causes the trail to taper.

When the screen opened I said "Wow!". Very good. It is nice when creativity works this well.

Oh MY! Splendid!
Which way did you do, from Zoom out to in? or vice versa?
Just perfect.

Absolutely love it! I have used a similar technique on other things, but never even thought about using it on stars! Great Work!
