You haven't really given us enough information here.

Mac or Windows ?

Extra codecs for what? Most modern software can edit the footage natively and export to H264, which is what is used for Blu-ray and the web. If you want DVDs then you'll need some way of getting it to MPEG2 for DVD (and suffer massive quality loss). Again much of the modern software includes ways to get things to DVD.

They play perfectly in Quicktime, iMove and Adobe Premiere on my Mac (OS 10.6.8). I didn't have to configure or add any Codec.

Can you edit movies in Quicktime and "iMove"? (I assume you mean iMovie.)

Yep, you can edit just fine in iMovie. You can do quick basic edits and exports in Quicktime (trim, reduce size change file format, etc.)

Premiere is the 'premiere' software for editing, there are other much higher priced alternatives, lower priced alternatives from Adobe; Premiere Elements, and from Corel and other vendors...

I think it's time to read your Premiere manual, find a few websites with info/tutorials on video making, perhaps even look at youtube for reviews/instructions...just a thought.

FYI, .MOV files can contain graphics files, video files, stills files and sound files, special effects as well. Software like Premiere allows you to combine them all. It can be much more complicated, time consuming then, shooting still images...a lot of fun also!

Good luck,
Jerry
