p.1 #1 · convert nef in viewNX 2 and then edit in photoshop CS6 color issue

When I convert a nikon d600 raw file in Nikons view NX2 to 16 bit tiff and then open the file in photoshop to edit (sharpness, etc) the color of the item is way off. In view NX 2 it looks warm and in photoshop it looks cool and off.

I have checked the color settings and they all are on adobe 1998. I have poured over all the settings and I can seem to find any settings in both that effect the outcome so the converted tiff looks the same in adobe photoshop as it did in view NX2.

In Photoshop, under Edit -> Color Settings, what do you have set/unset/checked/unchecked? It could be simply that PS is set to silently change the colorspace w/o indicating that it has. Are you sure that the TIFF out of NX2 is embedding the color profile?

Nothing is check marked in the NX2 color preferences as it should be no?

Additionally in Photoshop CS6 under working space: RGB: Adobe RGB 1998, CMYK U.S. Web coated (swop) v2, Gray: Gray Gamma 2.2, Spot: Dot Gain 20%, Color management policies: RGB: Preserve Embedded Profiles, CMYK: Preserve Embedded Profiles, Gray: Preserve Embedded Profiles, Conversion options engine: Adobe (ACE), Intent: Relative colormetric, Use Black Point Compensation: Checked, Use Dither (8-bit/channel images): Checked, Compensate for Scene-referred Profiles: checked

when you do the Save in NX2, it'll ask you if you want to embed the profile etc. You should be embedding it

I am converting from RAW. When I hit "convert files" button in top right, there is no such option as you mention.

at some point, you have to Save the image to TIFF format. The normal state of affairs is to save in NEF format which PS will NOT understand (ie. you will not see any modifications made in NX)

Cool! I am just confused because nowhere do you save a Tiff from the nef raw file. It does let you convert and in the dialogue box that pops up their is nothing that lets you preserve the color profile. There is a box that you can select/deselect that lets you remove an ICC color profile, but that has and is currently deselected.

You can't save a TIFF from a NEF *without* first converting it. Once you open the .NEF in NX, the software has already done a first pass at converting and that's what lets you Save As.. as a TIFF.

There is no intrinsic color profile in a NEF.

There is no "Save as" anything in NX2. There is convert which converts and saves a file to a designated place on your computer.

I believe the root of your problem is that Photoshop is set to preserve the existing color profile instead of converting to the desired working space. If the profile and working space are not the same, you'll definitely see color shifting like what you're seeing.

Try changing PS's color pref to 'Convert to Working' for RGB
