I want to try a teleconverter with my 80-200 AF-S. What would you suggest that won't degrade IQ/focus?

What would you suggest that will degrade IQ/focus the least?

I did some test with this lens, and 1.4x is probably as far as I'd want to go. After that, AF is going to get inconsistent and quality is going to go down. My review is at the link below if you'd like to see some samples:

Yes, the 1.4TC is the best (i.e., least IQ degradation). The TC20EIII does not do well with the AFS version (the 70-200/2.8VRII did way better).

I suspect you mis-read his question as 80-400 AF-S...

D'oh! I suspect you're right! Sorry, my bad!

Although to the OP - I'd still stick with the 1.4

Yes, I should have said "Degrades it the least"

Thanks for all of the responses. Through most of my searching I have only found people asking about TC's on the AF-D models, not the AF-s models. but most of those people say that they did not have good luck with the 2x (as you all mention), but I do remember many people saying that had good luck with a 1.7x. Anyone have any experience with a 1.7? I dont know if a 1.4 is enough to make me want to purchase one.

I had a 1.7x converter at one time and although I didn't have an 80-200 (now I'm on the right lens ), my 1.4x was better every time. To me the 1.7 was just "ok", but not in the same class as the 1.4 - and that's on all the lenses I tried it on. Ended up selling it, but I have been accused of being too picky too, so YMMV...

My copy could be different from John's, but anyway when I had this lens the TC20EIII delivered very good results, at least at short distances:

Sayaca Tanager side by labecoaves, on Flickr

Nikon D3, 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S + TC20EIII @ 330 mm, ISO 400, 1/200 sec, f8, handheld.

Sayaca Tanager dorsal view by labecoaves, on Flickr

Nikon D3, 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-S + TC20EIII @ 400 mm, ISO 320, 1/800 sec, f9, handheld.

Focus speed was fast enough for me, clearly faster than the old 80-400VR and slightly slower than the 300/4 AF-S.

Thanks for the post! I would like a 20, but I think I would prefer a 17 as I know the IQ would be better, but still give me enough extra reach to feel worth the IQ loss.

My testing was all at long distances - which is mostly what I shoot - and it definitely was not very good.
My results correlated with most other reports/tests on the web that I could find. I just sold my TC20EIII as I've only used it a couple of times in over a year. I since also sold my 80-200/2.8 AFS since I have the 70-200/4 VR and access to my company's 70-200/2.8VR-II. The TC20EIII was actually quite good on both of these lenses, though not up to the standard of my 400/5.6 ED AI.

Hi there, I have an issue trying to plug the TC20EIII I recently bought with my 80-200 AF-S.
A little mechanical stop on the TC avoid me from keeping the aperture ring on f/22 and have the lens recognised by the body...
Did you guys had the same problem the first time you connected them together?
Thanks a lot in advance!

Just picked up one of these, haven't used it with TC myself, but I've been reading a lot.
Ken Rockwell liked it with 1.7:

I have all 3 converters in the II series, but not that 80-200 lens you have. But I use them on several lenses and I get along best with the 1.7, but the 1.4 is excellent too. I got lucky (twice, I have 2) with the 1.7, fantastic. The 1.4 is not enough focal gain to offset the loss of a stop of light, in my opinion. Good day.
