p.1 #1 · p.1 #1 · Small Critters - Elk Island National Park

I will take a bit of a break from the Hawaii photos, and post some exotic and common locals instead - a few bugs from a nearby national park.

1. This damsel is no lady. Her meal is littered all over the place.

2. A pollen eating beetle (Orsodacnid Leaf Beetle) chowing down on Alberta`s provincial flower - the wild rose.

3. Fly amour. Nuf said. Could not find an ID for this one.

4. Robber Fly (Laphria sp.). One of the many bee mimics in the fly family.

5. Fly mimicking a wasp. I really enjoy seeing the different fly species that cause people to jump away in fear because it looks dangerous. Guess their disguise must pay off. Another one I could not easily ID.

I hope you enjoyed this little collection, and that it did no bug you. Will get back to some hot Hawaiian shots for the next post.

Comments are most welcome.

Ken

A great set Ken. I really like bugs, and you did very well with these. 1 is really neat the way the leaf frames the bug. 3 and 4 also stand out ~ Ron

Very nice work with the bugs Ken. All of these are well composed and well photographed. Shots like this take a whole different kind of patience, my hats off to you

Great macro shots Ken! I'm surprised we have not run into each other bug hunting in the park. I wish we had so you could show me how you get the whole fly in focus and not just the rear end.

Cheers,
Harry C

Thank you Ron! I spent about 4 hours on a 1 hour walk just because of all the cool bugs I was seeing. Lots of neat ones I missed still.

There is a lot of park there Harry! I've only done the south part of the park in early spring. Might be neat to check it out at this time of year. My usual haunt is the formal trail on the far end of Astotin Lake. Good variety there due to the water. Thanks for commenting.

Thank you kindly Herb. Not as impressive as falcons, but still cool.

Thank you Scott! Wolves and bears are way more glamorous, but we don't have a lot of those near here. So I settle for some wild looking insects.

Well, Ken.
You and Ron may be buggy (not that I'm surprised), but I am not buggy.
Wasps and yellow-jackets scare me- but bees do not.
I hate house flies- but many other flies don't bother me at all.
Beetles and Beatles never really bothered me.
Etc.
About these pics- no doubt about it- they are all terrific and I really like them all.
The first one being a slight favorite because I think damsel-flies eat mosquitoes.
Nicely done.
Charlie

Terrific set Ken,

I really like the colours in no.2 but overall I'm going with the last as my pick.

Paul.
