Presumably they chose each brand's highest-resolution camera for the test, so as to minimize the affects of sensor limitations on the final results.

You choose the lens and then choose the camera.
They have results for most canon/nikon cameras, it's not restricted to the 5DIII/D800.
You just have to select them and compare.

Try comparing the Nikon lens on the D4 and the Canon lens on the 5DIII and see how meaningless their "lens sharpness" metrics are. The Nikon scores 21 (12 P-Mpix) and the Canon scores 26 (20 P-Mpix).
The pixel density ratio between the 5DIII and the D4 is less than between the D800 and the 5DIII, just sayin'

The Chromatic Aberration measurements seem to be consistent and reliable though. The relatively high levels of CA is something I dislike about Nikon lenses, it goes through their whole line and can be seen at the-digital-picture charts also.

They did not do 1dx/600v2 combination. But if you look at D4/600vr vs 5diii/600v2, the canon shows way better than Nikon in all dimensions.Resoulution, Distortion, CA.

My point is that i) who knows what their resolution scale means, average - how averaged, at same fstop? etc., and ii) if you are comparing, use equivalent cameras (1dx) which they do not have available for some strange reason. And lastly, strangely, their conclusion (even) is not matched by the facts.

I like DX0mark. I love data. i just wish they would drop the silly rolled in weighting and present middle/edge resolution at widest fstop so it is more useful and less misleading. You have to understand their metrics to use them and they sell the average which encourages simple but mislead conclusions.

[Incidently if you look at thedigitalpicture http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/ISO-12233-Sample-Crops.aspx?Lens=748&Camera=453&Sample=0&FLI=1&API=1&LensComp=654&CameraComp=614&SampleComp=0&FLIComp=1&APIComp=0 you will find that although Nikon 600 is pretty good, the Canon does significantly better in the edges and when you put the 1.4x on it gets even more dramatic]

To me the most telling data in the DXO report was optimum aperture. It was f4 on the Canon's and f5.6 on the Nikons. Being able to stay at f4 is big

I currently own the Nikon 500 VR and 600VR and I am seriously considering selling the 600mm to buy the Canon 600mm IS.

I hate to do a split system, but I may need to. I love the Nikon system below 70mm and the D800. I miss the Canon telephotos and the 1D IV. PS- I don't miss the 800mm IS and would not by the Nikon 800mm VR. I like the flexibility of a 600mm with and without 1.4X

I have no idea.

I briefly owned a D4 and while AF was nice it seemed no better than the D800E or the Canon 1D IV and 1DsIII I had owned before.

The one cross over lens I have owned The Sigma 150mm OS, performed better on the Canon cameras, than it does on the Nikons. Continuous focus is smoother and more consistent. Still a nice lens on either system, but more confident on Canon.

So here is my question to people who own both systems if not both lenses.

If you were focused on weight and limiting yourself to an 8.5 to 8.6 lens.

How would you trade off the extra 100mm available as the 8.6 Lb Canon 600mm IS on a 22 MP 5DIII versus the 8.5 Lb Nikon 500mm VR with a 36MP D800E?

This is the question I am struggling with today. I know on a money basis the Nikon is an outright bargain. And by adding Nikon D7100 you can get an Equivalent Focal length of 750mm and 24 MP.

Somehow I still have a feeling the Canon 600mm and 5DIII, might be the better combination.

DXO suggests little difference.

Thoughts?

Thanks
Bill

I placed my order for 600/4VR two years back but when the lens arrived, I turned it off...because I saw the feather weight figure of 600/4II...well that is the weight issue only.
DxO mark lens comparison is somewhat more scientific...coz they relate the optical quality to camera sensor. In an attempt to clearify their own statement about how inferior Nikon and Sony's 500/4G are comparing to 500/4 IS II, I got this figure

This was what I got....comparing 500/4 on 1DsIII, D3x and A850
